Minecraft Mondays #2: Creeper

Welcome to Minecraft Mondays #2, the week of the Creeper block. :)

He's a really easy block, involving just two colors and a little slice and dice.

You'll need to pick your shade of green, and then a little bit of black.

First, cut the following:

(1) 3 1/2 x 12 1/2"
(2) 3 1/2 x 6 1/2"
(1) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 x 14 1/2"
(1) 2 X 6 1/2"

(1) 3 1/2 x 14 1/2"

Next, stitch the 3 1/2 x 14 1/2" strip of black and the 2 x 14 1/2" strip of green together.

Then, cut it into (3) 3 1/2 x 5" pieces and (2) 2 x 5" pieces.

Using these pieces and the other pieces you cut, stitch together in order of the numbered arrows. :)

And then you will have a Creeper!

If you'd like to sash as you go, cut a 5 1/2 x 12 1/2" rectangle of black (or your chosen sash color) and stitch your two blocks together. If you'd like to wait, that's fine, too.  I think I'll sash as I go, so I stay caught up with it while my son is in school. I'm determined to keep it a surprise!

Stay tuned next week for the Skeleton tutorial. I actually had to google to see what this one was called. haha  It probably won't be the last time I do that. ;)

In the meantime, here are some Steve sightings from instagram (Anita in Canada, and Eileen in New Jersey)

Minecrafts Mondays #1: Steve

Hi Friends!

Welcome to Minecraft Monday #1, the week of Steve.

If you missed the first post explaining Minecraft Mondays here's a brief recap:

My plan is to make a quilt for my son's birthday this year (actually FINISH it by his October birthday-ha!) and since he is way into Minecraft, I drafted up this quilt and will be making a block each week, and posting the tutorials here each Monday until the quilt is done.

This will help me be accountable and stay on track. :) (It will also help me keep it a surprise b/c he is so curious and always knows what's going on, so if I tried to make a quilt all at once he would somehow know about it. This way I can do a block each week while he's at school and hide it!)

And if anyone else wants to make one too, hooray! The more the merrier. :) The blocks will finish at 12" square and the quilt will be twin size (73" x 90").

It will be simple and beginner friendly since it's all pixel-y and straight seams.

First, pick out the shades of your choice for a skin tone, brown (hair & mouth), blue, white (eyes) and light brown (nose).

Here's the cutting list for Steve.(less than an eighth of a yard of each fabric, or in some cases scraps will work)

Skin Tone:

(1) 3 1/2" x 9 1/2"
(2) 2" x 6 1/2"
(6) 2" x 3 1/2"
(2) 2" square

Hair & Mouth:

(1) 3 1/2" x 12 1/2"
(1) 2" x 6 1/2"
(4) 2" square

(2) 2" square white
(2) 2" square blue

(1) 2" x 3 1/2"

Be sure to use a scant quarter inch seam as it will make a big difference. When I first started quilting, I didn't really know the difference between scant 1/4" and just plain 1/4", which led to lots of chopped off points and lots of blocks being smaller than they were supposed to be.

Here's what the general layout looks like. (not a great photo)

Step 1: Stitch together Steve's forehead in order of the numbered arrows and set aside.

Step 2: Again, in order of numbered arrows, stitch together Steve's face.

Step 3: Stitch upper and lower sections together.

And voila! Steve!!

Thanks for popping in and helping me keep on track! If you have any questions, please let me know. Creep on by next Monday. :D

Minecraft Mondays

***EDIT*** Click on the Minecraft Mondays button in the sidebar for all of the block links and more info on the sew along.***

Okay, here goes.  I'm about to cross the point of no return.. It's a risk putting this out there, b/c now I HAVE to do it. But I think it'll be worth it in the end.

I've been wanting to make my son another quilt, since he was three the last time I made one for him, and now he's NINE. And he LOVES Minecraft. So much that he begged for Minecraft to be the theme of his school's Literacy Night this year. ("ALL the kids LOVE Minecraft, Mom, so LOTS of kids will come!" -- I'm cochairing it again this year. It's so much fun!)

I've seen lots of Minecraft quilts on Pinterest, so I grabbed his Minecraft t-shirt, and some mini-figures he has, and snuck upstairs to try to copy their faces. :)  It will finish to be regulation twin size so he can use it on his bed.

He's even been doodling his own Minecraft quilts and asking me to make him one, so I'm thinking I might have to do a reversible quilt and do this one on the other side. Or maybe this as the center and the face blocks as a border. Or make this one as a lap quilt. Haven't decided for sure, but I think I will be making this too. :) I love how it has some depth. :)

His birthday is in October so I'm hoping planning to finish it/them by then.  I should have plenty of time since I'm getting a head start.

The added plan to post about it each Monday will help me stay on track. So next Monday will be the first official Minecraft Monday, and fingers crossed and knock on wood I will have finished the Steve block. :)  I'll post a tutorial in case anyone else wants to make one.

I may have two of my mom friends from school joining me.  They are beginners but I know they could do it b/c it's all straight lines and squares and rectangles! :)

Off to search for the perfect solid colors. And maybe Steve and I will see you here next Monday. :)

Happy Monday from the Minecraft house!
