Trying Something New
8:56 PM
Oh man! I am finally feeling like I'm back in the land of the living. That was a brutal two and a half days! Thank you soooo much for all of your well wishes--such love from all of you. Your kindness was so much appreciated!
I have been blogging only for about a month and a half now, and have already found such a sense of community and friendship. 2011 has definitely been a year of ups and downs, and this blogging experience so far has really helped me to focus on positive and happy things. And has encouraged and inspired me to be more creative which always helps too! :) And has generally just been alot of fun! So thanks to all of you!
Today I'm going to try something new again and link up with Thursday Think Tank @ Rebecca's.
Rebecca is one of those fun virtual friends I've made in blogland, that I probably wouldn't mind as a next door neighbor. In fact, I'm sure any and every one of you would make excellent next door neighbors. Think of the block parties we could have. Not only the block parties but the BLOCK parties! :)
Anyway, as I understand it, Thursday Think Tank is where you can post things you're thinking about, brainstorming about or just want to share. So I'm going to post these blocks and ask for opinions on what I should do with them.
I made them with some fat quarter bundles, some polka dots and some batiks, and a little triangle pattern that I cut out of paper, with regular scissors, before I was aware of the rotary cutter. Just started cutting triangles and putting blocks together.
That was probably 8 years ago? I thought I'd turn them into a quilt for my nephew who was 4 at the time. He is 12 now, and when I talked to him on the phone the other day, he sounded like a MAN. ACK! His voice is changing. Make it stop! Here they are again for good measure.. I think I might have made a couple more after the pic was taken. They are in a box in the closet somewhere but lately they've been on my mind.
Anyway, the project stalled, as many do, and I'm not sure how to put them together now. I'm thinking just some sashing and maybe wide borders? Yellow? Purple? Midnight blue? I don't know. The blocks kind of remind me of colorful kites. But who knows? Any ideas? Input appreciated!
Again, I was overwhelmed with all of the well wishes I received while under the weather, and I hope the bug stopped here and none of you get it!

Think Bette Midler - think Wind Beneath My Wings - Think You, Kelli, are my HERO!!! Thank you for playing along with my game...I think you made a perfect post for it too!!! A posting about brainstorming on your brainstorm!
Well, I don't know if I am just into a white kick right now...but those colors would really pop with just a plain white sashing between them. Also, the first thing I thought when I saw them was that you could practice/try Quilting As You Go with this project since it doesn't seem like something you are in love with...it would be good to experiment.
Should you decide to do QAYG...well...we could make it a QAL if you'd like. I am dying to try it out but haven't gotten the last push towards getting my bum in gear about it. You think it over... Either way, one day, I will be doing a QAYG!!!
Can't wait to see what you decide to do!!!
I was going to leave a comment about your blocks but then I saw the linkto a post about Buster in the E-Collar...then The post about Buster on the couch...then the post about Buster ......
anyway. I forgot what I was going to say about the quilt....Ithinkitmighthavebeensomethingabout BLUE forsashing
..I actually do like the blocks and the colors, I just got burned out on all of the little triangles at the time, and started the project without any real direction so didn't know where to go with it. I love the white idea, but if I still finished it for my nephew, not sure it would scream "boy". Hmm. Decisions, decisions. Keep the input coming. Looks like Buster is stealing the show Marianne. :)
I would do RED sashing and first border and then a BLUE border.
have fun with it.
Pleased you are feeling heaps better.
I'm going to be crrrrazy here and say - black sashing (or a dark grey/blue if you don't want to be so dramatic). Very boyish and will definitely make those colours stand out like crrrrazy. :)
Erin! I like the dark grey idea. What if I bordered each block with a deep bright orange, and then sashed it with a dark grey and set them on point or something. That could read 12 yr old boy no?
I am so happy you are feeling better! That is going to be an awesome quilt!
I wish I had some good suggestions for you...but I don't:) I have no clue about quilting but I do admire those who can quilt!
Glad to hear that you are feeling better!
I was thinking putting them on point and then you mentioned kites. You could put 10 on point on the front and have kite tails and then one on the back as the label. Or reverse 10 on point in the front and one kite (use pairie point for the tail) on the back.
Oh I keep forgetting to say I hope you feel better and now you are. I'm glad.
hmmm...I had to look at the blocks for a bit and hmmm...I still don't know. I see cool colors with pops of warm hot color. Using both a blue and orange somehow would keep it good for a boy. (I have plans to use this color scheme for sashing myself) anyway...Linda in Calif. has a super idea with the blocks on point and kites in the back!! So creative. You can always add a row of blocks to the top and bottom to make it longer.
And then this fantasy block of neighbors. I am pretty sure that it would have a monthly "eat cupcakes and look at fabric" club.
Glad to hear you are feeling better. You bounced back fast.
Not sure you'd want me as a neighbor. I have a bad habit of "borrowing" fabric.
I would audition fabric to see what you like best and just do a simple sashing so as not to take away from the blocks. I have a thing for tiny 1 inch sashings.
Take care...
Glad you're feeling better.
As for the blocks, I think midnight blue would be a really good choice with these. Or even black.
Lovely blocks!!! Fantastic colors and design:) Best, Debuko.
