Fabric Surprises

As most of you know, my grandma passed away last Sunday.  With family flying in and out of town, the funeral, etc., the last week has flown by.  Yet, at the same time it seems like we've lived a month or two since that time.  So so busy, and emotional.

My mom has also made a couple of trips to my grandma's house to look through all of her things (along with her siblings), and pick out special things or things to keep.

I was shocked when she brought these two tubs of scraps to me the other night. I had no idea that my grandma had all of this fabric.

On top in the above picture is a quilt top made of wool scraps.

I had so much fun looking through these bins and finding little treasures.  Scraps, cardboard quilting patterns (used before the days of rotary cutters), and a couple of stray quilt blocks.. even some stacks of cut triangles, squares, and tiny squares.  Wow.. and the thing that is the best of all.. when I opened these bins, the fabric smell smells just like I remember my grandparents house smelling when I would spend the night there as a little girl!  Inside these bins, time stood still. *tear*

The first scrap that I saw when I opened the first bin was this, which warmed my heart b/c I actually wore a black houndstooth top to her memorial service on Thursday.

Some other eye candy fabrics that I found.. the elephants are yummy!

Look at these.. I have plans for them!

The large double-knit 9-patches I'm not so sure about..
(sorry the pictures are so dark)

One more poignant photo to share. After the graveside portion of the service was over, my cousin Kristi and I were visiting, when they started the burial.  We started to leave, but our kids wanted to stay and "watch the dirt".  My son loves any kind of dirt moving machine!  They sat down on the grass and settled in, and I snapped a couple of photos with my phone.  Not until I cropped the photo did I realize how Karli was holding the flower.  This photo melts my heart.

I am so thankful for all of the memories and times I got to spend with her, and that my little boy was born in time to have 5 years with her.  Hopefully he will have  memories of the times he spent at her house. (and maybe a quilt or two from her scraps)  I miss her!!

Gonna link this post up to Melody's Tuesday Treasures.

I have some of those teeny tiny squares! When I was going through my aunt's fabric stash (her version of cleaning house, haha!) I found four boxes of them. They were fabric samples from a company I can't remember the name of - the idea being, you send them back the square and the yardage you wanted. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with them yet, but I look forward to making something with them! :)

Aww, what a lovely treasure trove for you to remember, and I know just what you mean about the smells. My gran's house has a particular smell, and I always associate it with my childhood.

You captured such a tender moment.

That is great that you are going to use her fabrics and be able to remember her everytime you use those quilts.

I am so sorry for your loss. I think it will be wonderful to have some quilts that you and your Grandma shared in making together..so to speak.

Lots of wonderful fabric to make something special in memory of Grandma.

What a wonderful box of treasures! Hugs to you.

I am sooo sorry for your loss! Grandmothers just hold a different place in our hearts than others, or at least mine did! I miss my 'MUNNER' still to this day and it has be numerous years since her passing. I too have some of her fabrics that I treasure!

How fun for you to discover some of her fabric stash!

How sweet of your mother to give you the bins. Having something so special to connect you to your grandmother will be so wonderful through the years to come. I have my grandmother's recipe for pie crust and french apple pie, and each year at this time, when I make the pies, I feel so close to her because of them. So sorry that she has passed, but I know you will be with her again in Heaven someday.

I am so sorry. Grandma's are so special! Your fabrics are all the more wonderful. I still have some stuff from both my grandma's. I am still using up old thread...sometimes it is on wood, sometimes, styrofoam!
She will love what ever you make!

Aw Kelli,
So sorry that you just lost your grandma. I lost mine not that long ago and often post about sewing with her bits of fabric too. I can't wait to see what you will make from all that fabric gold!
