A Swoon-y & Pinteresting Week.

  • Swoon pattern arrived. Yay!
  • Spent some time working out pairings for Swoon blocks.
  • Got background fabric for Swoon blocks.
  • Realized said background fabric wasn't working out when laid out with all of the fabrics.
  • Went back for different background fabric.

Here is the fat quarter pack all laid out on the table:

Okay, this FQ pack had lots more than 18 FQ's. But I stuck to the dots mostly and avoided the directional fabrics.  Which would take me forever to try and match, and would end up looking really bad if I know my own skill level..

Here are some of the cast-offs that were vetoed:

And here are my pairing choices along with the (second try) background fabric.  I didn't want just white, but I didn't really want another solid color background either.. so this is where I ended up.  Hopefully it will end up with a scrappily delicious feel.

The picture is a little blurry, but you can kind of see some green checks up at the top.. that was my original choice for the background.. BUT when laid out with all of the colors, it kind of swallowed up the greens and I started thinking it would look pretty messy with all of the seams.  So I really like the white with green dots a lot better!  Maybe the checks will make it onto the backing!

A closer look:

Almost ready to start cutting!

OH!  Something else I saw on Pinterest and couldn't stop thinking about..  A chore board for my son.

These chores were a little advanced for my son, and I didn't want him to have money attached to each one, so I decided to make my own.  Of course it's not as fancy as these, but it was WAY cheap and super easy, and I can't wait to put it to use.

I used:
  • small sheet of steel
  • plain wooden cabinet knobs
  • pkg of round magnets
  • black permanent marker
  • letter decals
  • electrical tape
  • hot glue
  • (husband to drill two holes for ribbon used for hanging)
  • moda ribbon from my FQ bundle
I spent only about $15:

Thank you Pinterest, and Moda. :)

Also found on Pinterest today, a fact that I would be willing to testify to, under oath, in a court of law:

It doesn't change when they turn five either.  Some days I feel like I'm being pecked to death by a duck, but most days I just love it!  One morning I laughed so hard b/c he saw my bra (shh.. no men read quilting blogs do they?) in the floor and asked me, "Are those your boobs in the floor?"  Er.. yes.. (thinking that's just what he was calling my bra).. He then looked very pointedly at my chest area (I was in my pajamas) and with a puzzled look said, "but you're still WEARING them!" Oh boy.  Sometimes the relentless questioning can lead to some good laughs.

Hope you're all having a great week!

I love your choice of the second background fabric. I agree that the check would be really busy and distracting. Your son is hilarious!

Love your choice of fabrics for Swoon, the dotty background is going to look great. Your bra story brightened my day, so funny!

love your choice of fabrics Kelli and love the idea of the buttons.xx

HA! If only we could take on and off those puppies every day... I think you're onto something! Love the chore board, also loving the planning and scheming you're doing for your swoons. I think you made the right choice switching background material! They will look great for sure.

Thanks for your story about your son's questions. It sure takes me back a few years!
Your swoon quilt is going to be gorgeous!

Oh my, but your Swoon is going to be gorgeous. I really like your fabric choices. And your story about your son brings back fond memories. Unfortunately, I didn't think to write things like that down, so the memories are there, but only sketchy.

2 great projects there, and ROFL at the 'pecked to death by a duck reference'

oh that is so funny!! My son asked if babies were born out of people's mouths the other day!!
I completely agree about the backing and think that's a great choice!
That board is completely genius!! I'm bookmarking this for when he's a bit bigger :)

Oh, that's so funny! And so sweet! Love your Swoon fabric and I'm looking forward to seeing your first block!

Hilarious! I'm glad you wrote it down--it's too easy to forget these funny things. I think your background fabric will be great. Keep us posted on your progress!

Love your choice for background - the white with dots seems to be just enough color and contrast. Your block combos look great, too! Can't wait to see the blocks on your wall! And that "chore board" is genius! I like your version with the wooden knobs - how clever!! ;))

Super cute chore board! I wish I had that idea when I had kids at home, it would have been so handy.

Love your second choice for background.
Read a blog today where she saved "cast-off" charms for a long time, dug them out and made a lovely pin-wheel quilt.

Love the chore board! Great way to make it work for you. And yeah, that sign could not be more true. Hate to tell you, nine does not seem to be the magic "stop talking incessantly" number either.

I can hardly wait to see your swoon blocks start to take shape. I love your fabric choices!

I am with Krista - I would love to take them off at night, or other times when I need a break. :)

You have chosen such pretty fabrics for such a pretty block! I really, really miss my "little boys". They are young adults now and I am happy they have grown into wonderful young men but....

Melanie here! I enjoyed this piece, please email me--I have a question about your blog. MelanieLBowen[at]gmail[dot]com

I came over here from Rebecca's blog. LOVE the name of your blog, BTW!!

I think that fabric will be cool in Swoon. I have my fabric chosen and it just sits there waiting to be cut...

Funny about 4-year-olds. I'll pass that on to my daughter-in-law--our grandson is turning 4 next month. And the "chore board" is an awesome idea.

And...I live in California too. Where do you live? I live in Fresno.

Hi Kelli, your fabric choices look so pretty, I think you are going to have an amazing quilt! Love the chore board, what a great idea. And I love the funny story of your son, my son is 12 and still talks lots!!

Yeah for dots! (Tell your son I´m a fan. I already loved his toiletpaper wishes. Haha so great!)
