Minecrafts Mondays #1: Steve
12:01 AM
Hi Friends!
Welcome to Minecraft Monday #1, the week of Steve.
If you missed the first post explaining Minecraft Mondays here's a brief recap:
My plan is to make a quilt for my son's birthday this year (actually FINISH it by his October birthday-ha!) and since he is way into Minecraft, I drafted up this quilt and will be making a block each week, and posting the tutorials here each Monday until the quilt is done.
This will help me be accountable and stay on track. :) (It will also help me keep it a surprise b/c he is so curious and always knows what's going on, so if I tried to make a quilt all at once he would somehow know about it. This way I can do a block each week while he's at school and hide it!)
And if anyone else wants to make one too, hooray! The more the merrier. :) The blocks will finish at 12" square and the quilt will be twin size (73" x 90").
It will be simple and beginner friendly since it's all pixel-y and straight seams.

First, pick out the shades of your choice for a skin tone, brown (hair & mouth), blue, white (eyes) and light brown (nose).
Here's the cutting list for Steve.(less than an eighth of a yard of each fabric, or in some cases scraps will work)
Skin Tone:
(1) 3 1/2" x 9 1/2"
(2) 2" x 6 1/2"
(6) 2" x 3 1/2"
(2) 2" square
Hair & Mouth:
(1) 3 1/2" x 12 1/2"
(1) 2" x 6 1/2"
(4) 2" square
Eyes:
(2) 2" square white
(2) 2" square blue
Nose:
(1) 2" x 3 1/2"
Be sure to use a scant quarter inch seam as it will make a big difference. When I first started quilting, I didn't really know the difference between scant 1/4" and just plain 1/4", which led to lots of chopped off points and lots of blocks being smaller than they were supposed to be.
Here's what the general layout looks like. (not a great photo)
Step 1: Stitch together Steve's forehead in order of the numbered arrows and set aside.
Step 2: Again, in order of numbered arrows, stitch together Steve's face.
Step 3: Stitch upper and lower sections together.
And voila! Steve!!
Thanks for popping in and helping me keep on track! If you have any questions, please let me know. Creep on by next Monday. :D
*Jan. 17, 2020, edited to add: I never dreamed these blocks would be so popular or that so many kids would use them to start sewing! If you make any of these, please come find me on Instagram, @kellifanninquilts. I'd love to see them! I'm going back though and trying to kind of update the info. Also, if you are on FB and would like, come join the sew along group on my FB page. It's such a nice, supportive group of quilters. And make sure you stitch all of the blocks using the scant quarter inch seam.

I only have a (very!) vague idea of what Minecraft is (and have no idea who/what Steve is!) but your son is going to love this quilt!
My grandson LOVES minecraft! Not just the computer part of it, but also the Legos and acting-it-out-with-friends aspect. Might try my hand at these blocks! Thanks for sharing!
I guess I'll be needing to make this quilt as well...either for my new grandson or my almost-four-year-old great nephew! This was NOT on my radar this year, but I can adapt!! Thanks for sharing your patterns because I have never seen Minecraft or it's stars!!!
Whoo-hoo! Awesome! My kids are going to freak out! :) Thank you Kelli.
My daughter is going to have a cow when I make this! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! :)
Oh My goodness! I just discovered this sew-along! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have 2 kids who are very much into minecraft and this will be PERFECT!!
Would you happen to know which solid you are using for the skin tone? Out of the 8000 solids I have here on hand, I don't have anything correct for the skin.
Thanks!
Oh my goodness! I just received the bundle from fat quarter shop and cannot wait to get started! My nine year old son will be so surprised this Christmas!! I am a semi beginer quilter. Thank you so much!!
Hi. Searching for colors for block 1. Which Bella Solid are you using for the skin tone block? Thanks.
My husband saw this and said, "That's the quilt I want!" So much for making my kids quilts of their own! ;-) Seriously, I'm glad he's excited about me making quilts! Here's a link to my Steve. Thank you for posting, and I LOVE the diagrams! They are amazing! http://somecooksomesew.blogspot.com/2016/03/minecraft-begins.html
I am starting late but have a quick question. could you please clarify the size of the block after they are pieced but before they are joined with the sashing? Are they 12 1/2 inches before adding the sashing to make a 12" finished block OR are they 12 inches before the sashing is added?
I am very new with quilting, so I have to ask what's the difference between 1/4" & scant 1/4"?
Thank you for keeping these posts alive! Here it is January 2018!! And I’m finally getting to this. Thankfully I ordered and received my fat quarter pack wayyyyyy back when. So, I’m all set to get to cutting and sewing. Better late than never lol.
I am so thankful I found this. My 5 year-old is a bit of a Minecraft fanatic. I ordered the fat quarter bundle (it's still on the site) and will start making it when the fabric comes in. I am excited, and he is excited. I love when people share their patterns with the rest of the world. Thank you!
Thank you so much for this. My 2 grandchildren are getting one each for 2019 Christmas!
I just wanted to say thank you for making this minecraft quilt pattern. Also the instructions are easy to follow. When my grandson asked me to make him a Minecraft quilt and I had no idea of how I was going to go about it. Lucky for us I found your page and I am working on his quilt now.
And here I am MANY years later and I'm about to make three of these concurrently (Grandsons and great-nephew). And quite pleased to be using my solids which are taking on a life of their own!
Thank you so much for your creation of this pattern, the videos, and keeping it available to those of us who are coming to the party late!
