Minecraft Mondays #24 Bonus Blocks: Guardian, Elder Guardian & Polar Bear
12:00 AM
Twenty four weeks into my son's epic 10th birthday quilt (which was only supposed to last 20 weeks), it's turning into the never ending project. :) But the end date for sure is Oct. 16th, his birthday. At first I was disappointed that he found out about his surprise quilt, but now I'm glad because he's taken an interest in helping to design it and we're having lots of fun with it.
He's been busy coming up with extra blocks since school's been out, so these are two that he drew himself. :D
These are characters in Minecraft that I didn't even know existed! Guardian and Polar Bear.
I also like, that with so many extra blocks, if someone makes another Minecraft quilt in the future, it could be totally different than the first one they made by mixing and matching combinations of blocks.
First up is the Guardian. I have no idea what he guards or why he looks like this. ;) But your kids probably do. ha!
You'll need a darker turquoise color, a lighter turquoise or aqua color, orange, white and brown.
Cutting:
Dark Turquoise: (2) 3 1/2 x 9 1/2"
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
Lighter Turquoise: (1) 2 x 8"
(1) 3 1/2 x 8"
(1) 3 3/8" sq.
(4) 2 3/8" sq.
Orange: (1) 2 x 8"
(1) 3 3/8" sq.
(1) 4 1/4" sq.
White: (1) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 x 2"
Brown: (1) 2 x 2"
Prep:
a) Using 3 3/8" sq. of orange and lighter turquoise, place right sides together and sew scant quarter inch from outer edge all the way around.
--Trim from corner to corner x 2. Press open to form (4) 2" unfinished (1 1/2" finished) HSTs (half square triangles). You might need to trim them just a bit to size.
b) Using 4 1/4" square of orange and (4) 2 3/8" squares of lighter turquoise, make four flying geese as follows.
--Trace diagonal lines on back of each smaller square. Place two of them as seen below, right sides together, and stitch a scant 1/4" from each side of line.
--Trim apart on line.
--Press as follows.
--Place remaining two squares as seen below, right sides together, and stitch scant 1/4" on each side of line.
--Trim apart on line. Press. You now should have (4) 2 x 3 1/2" flying geese units (1 1/2 x 3" when finished in quilt). Again, you might need to trim them just a bit. A couple of mine were just a hair too big, but it could've been my wandering seam. lol!
c) Stitch 2 x 8" strips of lighter aqua & orange, and 3 1/2 x 8" rectangle of lighter aqua together as shown below.
--Cut into four of the following 2 x 6 1/2" pieces.
Assembly: Assemble according to the small gray arrows first, then assemble in order of the numbered arrows.
And you have a Guardian.. to guard stuff..? ;) His one eye reminds me of Monsters, Inc. :D
*note*: To make your guardian into an Elder Guardian, just switch out the orange for lavender, the aqua for tan, and the brown for pink.
Elder Guardian! (according to my son..I really have no idea-lol)
********************************
Next up is the Polar Bear, another animal that I didn't know existed in Minecraft. He could use a wax. He's heavy on the eyebrows. ;)
You'll need white, dark gray (nose), medium gray (eye brows), lighter gray (nose), and black (eyes).
Cutting:
White: (1) 3 1/2 x 12 1/2"
(1) 3 1/2 x 6 1/2"
(2) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(3) 2 x 3 1/2"
(2) 2 x 2"
Medium Gray: (2) 2 x 5"
Light Gray: (1) 2 x 6 1/2"
(2) 2 x 2"
Dark Gray: (1) 3 1/2 x 6 1/2"
(2) 2 x 2"
Black: (2) 2 x 2"
Assembly: Assemble the top, middle and bottom sections according to the numbered arrows, then assemble according to the large gray arrows.
And it's a Polar Bear. :D
Thanks for popping in today. Between @little.emerz, @wisemantammy, myself, and my son, we will have over 20 extra blocks! That's enough for a whole seperate Minecraft quilt. Before I started doing this, I had no idea there were so many different characters! Or that I would be doing this many extras. I had only planned on a couple. But I'm loving that they're so easy and colorful! And the time spent with my son. :)
Happy Monday! Hope you're staying cool. I'm in Northern Calif., and it is so hot. And fires seem to be popping up everywhere! :( It's that season again.
Have a great week!

I just HAVE to ask Kelli.......do you actually play Minecraft, or are you just going off of images? I have this hilarious vision in my mind of you playing Minecraft in between designing sessions........and saying......"OK, I have to get this exactly right in the quilt!" LOLOL Hope you are doing well!
Kelli, my admiration for your work has gone up by leaps and bounds this past week because I actually tried to make a quilt block pattern. I am seriously impressed with what you have done to create, and then to simplify your quilt blocks!!!! (I was already pleased with your patterns before I tried to create one myself but true appreciation comes from doing, I guess.) If you are interested, I created a diamond sword pattern that should work. I would have checked it on fabric except my machine is in the shop. :P Here is the web address: http://somecooksomesew.blogspot.com/2016/06/minecraft-block-diamond-sword_27.html
I love the polar bear!
Hmm... now I'm thinking, since I have 2 kids who love Minecraft, I could make a 2nd quilt with just bonus blocks for the 2nd kid. 😃 According to my son, the polar bear is fairly new from the latest update. If they keep updating the game with new characters, it truly will be the never ending quilt!
I just finished my quilt last night and want to thank you for sharing this pattern. I have shared a picture of my finished quilt in the "Quilting and Sewing Enthusiasts" group on Facebook along with a link to your website. Thank you again for being so generous.
