Minecraft Quilt Bonus Blocks: Sword & Shulker
12:00 AM
Still mining along at the Fannin house. This week, (week 25!) we're making the sword (from @wisemantammy but revamped into a 12" block), and Shulker, drawn by my son. Another character that I had never seen before!
First up is the sword. (Thanks Tammy!!) :D
For the sword you'll need a four shades of blue green/green or whatever color you'd like your sword to be, two shades of brown, and a background color. I'm using purple again, since this one is going on the back of my son's quilt.
Let's get started. The squares in this sword are pretty tiny in order for it to be a 12" block, but I think it will go together pretty easily.
Cutting:
Dark Brown: (1) 1 1/4 x 3 3/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 1 1/4"
Light Brown: (1) 1 1/4 x 3 3/4"
Darkest Green:
(1) 2 1/2 x 2 3/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 6 1/2"
(2) 1 1/4 x 7 1/2"
(2) 1 1/4 x 5 1/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 3 3/4"
(5) 1 1/4 x 1 1/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 2"
Medium Green:
(1) 1 1/4 x 5 1/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 3 3/4"
Lighter Green:
(1) 1 1/4 x 7 1/2"
(3) 1 1/4 x 1 1/4"
Lightest Green:
(2) 1 1/4 x 7 1/2"
(4) 1 1/4 x 1 1/4"
Background: (1) 1 1/4 x 2 1/2"
(1) 2 x 6 1/2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 7 1/2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 3 3/4"
(2) 5 x 6 1/2"
(2) 2 x 2"
(2) 2 x 2 3/4"
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 3/4 x 3 1/2"
(3) 1 1/4 x 1 1/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 2"
Prep: Label the pieces from each step with that step's letter as you prep them. It will be quicker to match them to the pieces in the assembly diagrams.
a) Stitch 1 1/4 x 3 3/4" rectangles of dark brown and light brown together as shown below, then cut into (3) 1 1/4 x 2" rectangles. Set aside.
b) Stitch 1 1/4 x 2 1/2" rectangle of background, and 2 1/2 x 2 3/4" rectangle of darkest green together as shown below, then cut into (2) 1 1/4 x 3 1/2" rectangles. Set aside.
c) Stitch 1 1/4 x 6 1/2" rectangle of darkest green and 2 x 6 1/2" rectangle of background together as shown below, then cut into (2) 2 x 2 3/4" and (2) 1 1/4 x 2 3/4" rectangles. Set aside.
d) Gather 1 1/4 x 7 1/2" strips of background (1), darkest green (2), lighter green (1), and lightest green (2) and stitch together as shown below. Then cut into (6) 1 1/4 x 5" rectangles. Set aside.
e) Stitch (2) 1 1/4 x 5 1/4" strips of darkest green, and (1) 1 1/4 x 5 1/4" strip of medium green together as shown below, then cut into (2) 2 x 2 3/4" and (1) 1 1/4 x 2 3/4" rectangles. Set aside.
f) Stitch 1 1/4 x 3 3/4" rectangles of darkest green, medium green and background together as shown below, then cut into (3) 1 1/4 x 2 3/4" rectangles. Set aside.
g) Using (2) 1 1/4" sq. of darkest green, and (1) 1 1/4" sq. each of lighter green and lightest green, stitch the following unit. Set aside.
h) Using 1 1/4 x 2" rectangles of background and darkest green, stitch the following unit and set aside.
i) Using a 1 1/4" sq. each of background, darkest green, lighter green and lightest green, stitch the following unit and set aside.
j) Using (2) 1 1/4" sq. of lightest green, and one each of lighter green and darkest green, stitch the following unit and set aside.
Assembly: In the following diagrams, the preassembled pieces from the steps above are labeled with that step's letter.
Part 1: Assemble according to small gray arrows first, then according to the numbered arrows. Set aside.
Part 2: Assemble according to small gray arrows first, then according to the numbered arrows.
Stitch upper edge of Part 2 to lower edge of Part 1.
Part 3: Assemble according to small gray arrows first, then assemble according to the numbered arrows.
Stitch left edge of Part 3 to right edge of Parts 1 & 2.
Part 4: Assemble according to the small gray arrows first, then assemble according to the numbered arrows.
Stitch left edge of Part 4 to the right edge of Part 3.
Sword! Wow, I'm glad that's done! :D That was by far the most complicated block in the sew along. But I hope it came together without too much trouble for you if you made one. My wandering seam appeared again, and not all of the points match if you look too closely,(and it might not be exactly square), but you know what? I did my best. I don't think my son will care when he's sleeping under it at night. He is just loving this whole process.

Next up is Shulker. I have no idea what this one does, but I know that it will seem like a breeze to piece after that sword!
You'll need a lavender, skin tone, white, black, and lighter tannish color of your choice.
Cutting:
Lavender: (1) 5 x 12 1/2"
(1) 2 x 9 1/2"
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
(2) 2 x 2"
Skin Tone: (1) 2 x 9 1/2"
(1) 3 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
Black: (2) 2 x 2"
White: (2) 2 x 2"
Tan: (1) 2 x 9 1/2"
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
Assembly: Assemble each section in order of the numbered arrows, then assemble according to the large gray arrows.
Shulker!
Next time will be the Siamese Cat that my son drew for his quilt, and the Sheep, which can apparently be dyed different colors in the game? My son is asking for a blue sheep. ha!
See you next time! Have a great week, and thanks for following along!

They are such a nice, helpful and encouraging group of quilters! Also, be sure to always use the scant quarter inch seam when stitching these blocks! xx
