Harry Potter Sew Along Kick Off

Hi, everyone! 👋

The day is here! This is the kick off post of the tandem Harry Potter Sew Along that Sew Fresh Quilts and I are doing this year. (#hpqal2019) We both had planned a Harry Potter quilt, and thought we would just do them at the same time and crosslink to each other's blocks, so you have twice the options in case you want to mix and match! The more the merrier! Below is the quilt I'm doing. It finishes at 77 x 96" so a generous twin size. I've had a few questions about upsizing to queen. Let me know if you need to upsize, with extra blocks, or enlarging the sashing, we'll figure it out! It can be enlarged to queen size pretty easy, by adding a column and the five planned extra blocks, or enlarging the sashing. Of course you could make a lap quilt by just doing nine blocks instead of 20. One block would be a great size for a pillow if you have a son/daughter/grand who wants to learn to sew.

All of t
he blocks are 18". I will post a new block each Saturday at 12:01 a.m. Pacific time. This coming Saturday, the 19th, will be Sew-Along-Saturday #1. 😊

Some newsy things:

1. There are links to the fabric I'm using over there in the sidebar if you'd like to use them, too. There is also a downloadable PDF of the yardage reqs. in case you'd like to use different fabrics or sew your stash. It's located on the sew along page, which you can reach by clicking here, or by clicking the sewalongs tab at the top of the page up there and clicking on the Harry Potter sew along

2. The HP sew along page is also where you'll find the link to each block's tutorial post. I'll be leaving them there, so don't worry about falling behind, or joining late, etc. They will always be there! Also, at the end of each post will be a link where you can download a PDF and print out that post, if you'd like. The PDF links will go live a few hours after the blocks are posted.
……………………

*Look for giveaways along the way! Including one that is starting today over on Instagram where RobotMomSews (Unicorn Thread Gloss) has donated three tins of her Harry Potter Scented Thread Gloss. If you have an Instagram account, click here to check it out.(after 9 a.m.) I'll pick a winner on Saturday! Scents like Butterbeer, Hogwarts Library, etc.❤

3. This sew along is the first where I've used multiple clip and flip units. Minecraft & Pokemon were pretty much all squares and rectangles. So I thought I would post the units that are used most frequently here for a quick preview. Simple corner to corner stitching.

*Helpful tip: If you trace a stitching line, with a pencil or fabric marker, from corner to corner, stitch not exactly on the line, but right beside it, hugged up next to it, but on the side that will be clipped off. That will give you a little room to flip your corner piece over and still have your unit be true to size.

Left Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or left upper corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower  corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

Right Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or right upper  corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

Left Lower Clip & Flip

1. Place square at lower end or left lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

Right Lower Clip & Flip

1. Place square at lower end or right lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

Left Lower/Right Upper Double

1. Place a square at the left end or lower left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or upper right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

Left Upper/Right Lower Double

1. Place a square at the left end or upper left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or lower right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

Double Upper Rectangle

1. Place a square at the upper end of a rectangle, right sides together.
2. Stitch from corner to corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the same end of the rectangle, right sides together. Stitch from opposite corner to corner, making sure your two seams cross each other.
5. Clip, flip & press.

Double Half Square Triangle (HST)

1. Place two squares right sides together.
2. Trace a line from corner to corner.
3. Stitch scant 1/4" from the line on both sides.
4. Cut on the line, separating the two HSTs.
5. Press open.

If I find any more units that aren't included above, I'll plug them in here, but it's all pretty straightforward. All straight seams, no paper piecing! And don't worry, I'll include them in the posts as well, if they're used. This is just a preview. It's all just plain old patchwork and straight seams. 🙌 My favorite!

4. These blocks have quite a few pieces, so make sure you use a scant quarter inch seam. ↞ click if you're unfamiliar with it. I got a lot of questions about it during the Minecraft Sew Along, so I did a tutorial post. It will make a huge difference!

I think that covers it for the newsy and prep type things! If you can sew a straight seam, you can make these blocks! 😍

See you Saturday, when I'll share the instructions for Harry!

If you're up on your Potter trivia, you will notice that his eyes should be GREEN! Off I go to look for a couple of small green scraps! 😁 Woops! 📚📙 Thanks to a keen eye on Instagram for pointing that out to me! (You know who you are!) 💗

All of the info to make this guy is coming your way Saturday! Don't forget to check out Lorna's intro post at Sew Fresh Quilts, and stay tuned!

If you made it to the end of this newsy post, huge thanks! Don't forget to go enter to win some HARRY POTTER THREAD GLOSS! Off I go to stitch up my Harry block so I can share him with the tutorial on Saturday!

See you there!

The HP quilts are going to be so darn cute. Thanks girls for this

Darn, I'm not on Instagram. Is the thread stuff like scented thread magic? I love thread magic. Hmmm..I wonder if hubby can sign up instead of me (he has Instagram).

Hi Kelli,
Joining this very late! Just one question - it is probably self-explanatory once I get going - but just wondering about the (*)(**) asterisks I'm seeing in the colored sections next to the letters. Could you please explain. Thank you Karen
