Harry Potter Quilt Week 11: Broom

Welcome back to Sew Along Saturday, #11 -- this week it's on to the Broom block! Nimbus 2000? Firebolt? I don't really know any others, haha! I should ask my son.




So let's get started cutting! Oh, FIRST, Congratulations to Judy, who is making a HP quilt for her daughter who is a Harry Potter fan! You won the giveaway, Judy! If you send me your address I will forward it to FQS so they can get your prize off to you! 🎉 






Background (A):
(2) 1 1/2" sq.
(5) 2" sq.
(3) 2 x 2 1/2"
(3) 2 x 3"
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 x 4"
(1) 2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(2) 4 1/2" sq.
(1) 4 1/2 x 6"
(1) 4 1/2 x 8"
(1) 5 1/2 x 7"
(1) 6 x 7 1/2"


Darker Brown (B):
(1) 1 1/2 x 2"
(1) 1 1/2 x 6"
(1) 1 1/2 x 6 1/2"
(7) 2" sq.
(1) 2 x 3"
(2) 2 x 4 1/2"
(2) 2 x 6 1/2"
(2) 2 1/2 x 3"
(1) 6" sq.


Lighter Brown (C):
(3) 2" sq.
(1) 2 x 2 1/2"
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 x 4"
(2) 2 x 5 1/2"
(1) 2 x 6"
(1) 2 x 6 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 5"


Darker Yellow (D):
(3) 2" sq.












This block has only three sections.


Section One:
1. Using a 6 x 7 1/2" rect. of background (long edge facing up) and a 2" sq. of darker brown, make one right lower clip & flip unit.


Right Lower Clip & Flip


1. Place square at lower end or right lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.

3. Clip, flip & press.




2. Using a 6" sq. of darker brown and (2) 4 1/2" sq. of background, make one left upper/right lower  double corner clip & flip unit.


Left Upper/Right Lower Double


1. Place a square at the left end or upper left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.

3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or lower right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.




3. Assemble as shown below. Label as Section 1 and set aside.

















Section Two:
1. Using the following, with the short edge of the rect. facing up, make right upper clip & flip units:

a. 2 1/2 x 5" rect. of lighter brown & 2 1/2" sq. of background.

b. 2 1/2 x 3" rect. of darker brown & 2 1/2" sq. of lighter brown.

c. 2 x 4 1/2" rect. of background and 2" sq. of darker brown.

d. 2 x 3 1/2" rect. of background and 2" sq. of darker brown.

e. 2 x 3" rect.of background and 2" sq. of lighter brown.

f. 2 x 2 1/2" rect. of background and 2" sq. of darker brown.

g. 2 x 3 1/2" rect. of lighter brown and 2" sq. of background.


Right Upper Clip & Flip


1. Place square at upper end or right upper  corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.

3. Clip, flip & press.


2. Using the following, with the short edge of the rect. facing up, make left upper clip & flip units.

a. 2 x 2 1/2" rect. of background and 2" sq. of darker brown.

b. 2 x 3" rect. of background and 2" sq. of lighter brown. Repeat for total of two.

c. 1 1/2 x 6 1/2" rect. of darker brown and 
1 1/2" sq. of background.

d. 2 x 3 1/2" rect. of background and 2" sq. of darker brown.


Left Upper Clip & Flip


1. Place square at upper end or left upper corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from right upper to left lower  corner.

3. Clip, flip & press.


3. Place 2" sq. of background and darker brown right sides together. Stitch from corner to corner. Trim, flip & press for one 2" (1 1/2" finished) half square triangle.

4. Assemble as shown below. Label as Section 2 and set aside.





Section Three:
Using the following, with the short edge of the rect. facing up, make left upper clip & flip units. (Use illustration for left upper clip & flip in Section Two.)

a. 2 1/2 x 3" rect. of darker brown and 2" sq. of darker yellow.

b. 1 1/2 x 6" rect. of background and 1 1/2" sq. of background.

c. 2 x 6 1/2" rect. of lighter brown and 2" sq. of background.

d. 2 x 3 1/2" rect. of lighter brown and 2" sq. of background.

2. Assemble as shown below. Label as Section 3 and set aside.






Block Assembly: Assemble as shown below, and you will have an 18 1/2" (18" finished in quilt) broom block!
