Harry Potter Quilt Week 7: Harry's Glasses

Welcome back to Sew Along Saturday #7 where, this week, we're making Harry's Glasses! As you can see, I changed them a little to be more accurate.





This block only uses four colors! Let's get cutting!



Background:
(8) 1 1/2" sq.
(1) 1 1/2 x 3"
(1) 1 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 1 1/2 x 4"
(2) 2" sq.
(1) 2 x 2 1/2"
(1) 2 x 4"
(1) 2 x 6"
(7) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 4"
(1) 2 1/2 x 5"
(1) 3" sq.
(1) 3 1/2 x 4"
(1) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 3 1/2 x 5 1/2"
(1) 4 x 18 1/2"
(1) 5 x 7"
(1) 5 x 7 1/2"
(1) 5 x 10 1/2" 

Black:
(12) 1 1/2" sq.
(1) 1 1/2 x 2"
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2"
(5) 1 1/2 x 3"
(2) 1 1/2 x 4"
(3) 2" sq.
(1) 2 x 3"
(1) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2 x 4"
(1) 3" sq.
(1) 3 x 4"

White:
(2) 3" sq.


Yellowish White:

(1) 1 1/2" sq.





Part One:
1. Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of background and (1) 1 1/2" sq. of black, make one three-patch HST.




2. Assemble as shown below. Label as Section 1 and set aside.










Part Two:
1. Using a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" rect. of black and (2) 2 1/2" sq. of background, with long edge facing up, make one double upper corner unit.
2. Repeat using a 3 1/2 x 4" rectangle of background, with short edge facing up, and (2) 2" sq. of black.


Double Upper Corners


1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.

3. Clip, flip & press.

4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.


3. Using a 3 x 4" rectangle, short edge facing up, a 2 1/2" sq. of background in the left lower corner, and a 3" sq. of background in the right upper corner, make one left lower/right upper clip & flip unit.
4. Repeat using a 2 x 3" rect. of black, LONG edge facing up, a 2" sq. of background in the left lower corner, and a 1 1/2" sq. of background in the right upper corner.
5. Repeat using a 3" sq. black, a 2" sq. of background in the left lower corner, and a 2 1/2" sq. in the right upper corner.


Left Lower/Right Upper Double


1. Place a square at the left end or lower left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.

3. Clip, flip & press.

4. Place a square at the right end or upper right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.





6. Using a 2 1/2 x 4" rectangle of background, SHORT edge facing up, and a 1 1/2" sq. of black, make one right upper corner clip & flip unit.
7. Repeat, using a 3 1/2 x 4 1/2" rectangle of background, LONG edge facing up, and a 1 1/2" sq. black.

Right Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or right upper  corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.


7. Assemble as shown below. Label as Section 2 and set aside.














Part Three:
1. Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of black and (1) 1 1/2" sq. of background, make one three-patch HST unit. Repeat for total of three units.

2. Using 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" rectangle of background, long edge facing up, and (2) 1 1/2" sq. of black, make one double upper corner clip and flip unit.

3. Using a 1 1/2 x 4" rect. of black, LONG edge facing up, and a 1 1/2" sq. of background, make one lower left clip and flip unit.


Left Lower Clip & Flip


1. Place square at lower end or left lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.

3. Clip, flip & press.



4. Assemble as shown below. Label as Section 3 and set aside.

















Part Four:
1. Stitch 2 x 2 1/2" rect. of background and 1 1/2 x 2" rect. of black together as shown below. Then, using this unit, LONG edge facing up with black end at the left, and a 2" sq. of black, make one left lower corner clip & flip unit.




2. Using 3 1/2 x 5 1/2" rect. of background, SHORT edge facing up, and 1 1/2" sq. of black, make one left lower corner clip & flip unit.
3. Using 1 1/2 x 4" rect. of background, LONG edge facing up, and 1 1/2" sq. of black, make one left lower clip & flip unit.

4. Using 2 1/2 x 4" rectangle of black & (2) 2 1/2" sq. of background, SHORT edge up, make one left lower/right upper double clip & flip unit.

5. Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 4 and set aside.

 







Block Assembly: Assemble as shown below. You will now have a block of Harry's Glasses!

You are beyond imaginative Kelli!

In part 4, number 3, shouldn't it be a rectangle of black and 1 1/2" sq of background? That's what the picture shows, but the directions are the opposite (see below).

3. Using 1 1/2 x 4" rect. of background, LONG edge facing up, and 1 1/2" sq. of black, make one left lower clip & flip unit.
