Scrappy + Quilt Blocks

The other day, I decided to play with some scraps so started making these improv scrappy +'s again.

I had done a tutorial for them a few years ago in 2015. You can see it here. I named them Trash to Treasure blocks at the time because you can really use any size scraps.

#noscrapleftbehind 😉

This time though, I used a 6" sq. of white, and stitched scraps around the outside edges until there was enough block to trim to 10" sq. Then I cut into quarters (four 5" squares), flipped the outside corners to the inside and stitched together.

In no time I had eight in total.

The scraps have been threatening to take over for so long now, it feels good to use some of them up! Although, eight blocks in, it hasn't made a dent!

I've been going about it, totally improv and non-planned, just grabbing scraps at random. If one scrap is too small, I sew it to another, etc. until it's big enough. Right now I'm up to a total of 12.

This will be a big quilt! I'm thinking now, whether I will add sashing or not. Or frame each block in various solid colors. Or just stitch them all together with no sash. There might be a lot of seams butting up to each other that way, though. Oh well.. I have some time to decide!

This kind of minimal brain power required sewing is just what I needed! It's so much fun to see how they turn out each time, and so relaxing with no plans, no seams to match etc.

In other fun news, I was a guest on Pat Sloan's quilting podcast today! It was a lot of fun to talk to her about One Giant Stitch! And to be included in such good company! You can listen to it here

Happy Monday! Wishing you a good week ahead! If you're stitching along with the Harry Potter quilt along, Saturday's block will be pixelated Snape, and I'm working on a fun giveaway! See you then!

Happy Stitching!

xoxo

I'm going to try that block one of these days. Right now I'm saving my scraps for 2 back to back scrappy block classes in May.

I am totally in love with scrappy quilts these days and I LOVE your version ( I have a thing for "plusses" too ;) ). I recently organized my scraps and am hoping to really stay on top of them and create more with them. I will have to have a go at your pattern. Thanks for sharing.

This is pure scrappy genius!! I ❤️It!

Wonderful working in this blog has one. I as of late sorted out my pieces and am wanting to truly remain over them and make more with them. I should have a go at your example. I am absolutely enamored with crude stitches these days.
