Happy Birthday Mickey Mouse Quilt Block Tutorial

Today, in honor of Mickey Mouse's birthday, I thought I'd share this Mickey Mouse quilt block that I made! It's the second block of my National Days blocks project.

It's super simple, and scrap friendly, and I've used my stash of Riley Blake basics scraps again.

Here are the details. If you can clip & flip a corner, and sew a straight seam, you can make this block!

 Mickey Mouse Quilt Block

Fabric A (Background):
(6) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(2) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(2) 2" sq.
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"

Fabric B (Mickey):
(1) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(2) 3 1/2 x 4"
(1) 3 1/2 x 5 1/2"

~Using (2) 2" sq. of Fabric A and a 3 1/2 x 5 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit. This will make up the lower section of the block.

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

~Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a 3 1/2 x 4" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, and the above method, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit.
~Repeat for total of two of these units.

Left Lower Clip & Flip

1. Place square at lower end or left lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

~Using one of these units, and an additional 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A, and the above method, do a left lower corner clip and flip. This completed piece will make up the left ear.

Right Lower Clip & Flip

1. Place square at lower end or right lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

~Using one of these units, and an additional 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A, and the above method do a right lower corner clip and flip. This completed piece will make up the right ear.

Assemble as shown below. You will have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) Mickey block!

Happy Birthday to America's favorite mouse! 🐭🎂

If you make up some Mickey blocks tag me on social media so I can see them, I'd love to see! (@kellifanninquilts on IG or #kellifanninquiltdesigns) I think a scrap Mickey quilt would be really cute!

Until next time! Thanks for visiting. Hope you have a great week and Happy Stitching!

xoxo

P.S. 2021 *Update* I made a video tutorial of this block over on youtube. You can view it *here*. It's about a minute and a half long. I'm having lots of fun making little short jingly videos to go with some of these block tutorials. They're short but you could easily pause them and sew along with them.
