Harry Potter Quilt: McGonnagal Kitty

Hey everyone! I'm back with another Harry Potter extra block, this one is #12! I had no idea there would be so many extra block options. This one first appeared in the Facebook sew along group, and comes to you courtesy of Michelle Reading! Thanks for your imagination Michelle, and for being willing to share, and not minding the few small changes I made! Here she is! 



Let's start cutting! She uses six colors.





Background (A):
(7) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 4"
(3) 2 1/2" sq.
(2) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(2) 2 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(2) 2 1/2 x 12 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2 x 4" (for whiskers)
(2) 2 7/8" sq.
(2) 4 1/2 x 6 1/2"


Gray (B):
(15) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(3) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(5) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" (***)
(2) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" (****)
(1) 2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2" sq.
(2) 3 x 5 1/2"
(1) 3 x 4" (for whiskers)
(2) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(3) 2 7/8" sq.


White (C):
(2) 1 x 2" (for eyes)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2" (for eyes)
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(2) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" (***)
(1) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" (****)
(1) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"



Black (D):
(4) 1 x 5" (for whiskers)
(12) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(5) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(2) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" (****)
(2) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 7/8" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"


Pink (E):
(5) 1 1/2" sq. (for eyes & nose)


Green (F):
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (for eyes)








Part 1:

Double Half Square Triangle (HST)

1. Place two squares right sides together.
2. Trace a line from corner to corner.
3. Stitch scant 1/4" from the line on both sides.
4. Cut on the line, separating the two HSTs.
5. Press open.



~Using 2 7/8" sq. of Fabrics A & B, and the method above, make (2) 2 1/2" half square triangles. Repeat for total of (4).
~Place a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric E right sides together in the (B) corner of ea. half square triangle. Stitch from corner to corner. Trim, flip & press.

~Stitch (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric F & 1 1/2 x 2" rect. of Fabric C together as shown below, and cut in half. You will have the two units for the eyes.

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 1 and set aside.

Part 2:

Right Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or right upper  corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.




~Using 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D and 1 1/2 x 2" rect. of Fabric C-short edge at the top, make one right upper corner clip & flip unit.

Left Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or left upper corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower  corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.




~Using 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D and 1 1/2 x 2" rect. of Fabric C-short edge at the top, make one left upper corner clip & flip unit.

~Stitch 2 1/2 x 4" rect. of Fabric A and 3 x 4" rect. of Fabric B together as shown below. trim into (4) 1 x 5" strips as shown.

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 2 and set aside.

Part 3: (for right upper and left upper corner clip & flip units, use diagrams located in Part 2)

~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 2 1/2 x 4 1/2" rectangle of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one right upper corner clip & flip unit.

~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 2 1/2 x 4 1/2" rectangle of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one left upper corner clip & flip unit.

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.





~Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top, and the above method, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit.

Left Lower/Right Upper Double

1. Place a square at the left end or lower left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or upper right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.





~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A (left lower corner), a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B (right upper corner) and a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-long edge at the top, and the above method, make one left lower/right upper corner clip & flip unit.

Left Upper/Right Lower Double

1. Place a square at the left end or upper left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or lower right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.







~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B (left upper corner), a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A (right lower corner) and a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-long edge at the top, and the above method, make one left upper/right lower corner clip & flip unit.

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 3 and set aside.

Part 4: (for left upper corner clip & flip unit, use diagram located in Part 2)

~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" rectangle of Fabric D-short edge at the top, make one left upper corner clip & flip unit.

~Place 2 1/2" sq. of Fabrics A and D right sides together. Stitch diagonally from corner to corner. Trim, flip & press. You will have one 2 1/2" half square triangle.

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 4 and set aside.

Part 5: (use the double half square triangle method located in Part 1 and the left and right upper corner clip & flip method located in Part 2 for the units in this section)

~Using 2 7/8" sq. of Fabrics B & D, make (2) 2 1/2" half square triangles.
~Place a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B right sides together in the (D) corner of ea. half square triangle. Stitch from corner to corner. Trim, flip & press.

~Using 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-short edge at the top, make one right upper corner clip & flip unit.
~Repeat using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-short edge at the top.

~Using 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-short edge at the top, make one left upper corner clip & flip unit.
~Repeat using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-short edge at the top.

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 5 and set aside.

Part 6: (use the double upper corner method located in Part 3 for the units in this section)

~Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D and a 3 x 5 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit.
~Repeat for total of two of these units.


-------------------------

~Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 3 1/2 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-short edge at the top, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit. 
~Flip this unit around, and do the same in the remaining two corners

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 6 and set aside.

Part 7: (for right upper and left upper corner clip & flip units, use methods located in Part 2; for the double upper corner cliop & flip unit, use the method located in Part 3)

~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D and a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-short edge at the top, make one right upper corner clip & flip unit.
~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D and a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-short edge at the top, make one left upper corner clip & flip unit.

~Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric C, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit.

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 7 and set aside.

Part 8: (for right upper and left upper corner clip & flip units, use methods located in Part 2; for the double upper corner cliop & flip unit, use the method located in Part 3)

~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-short edge at the top, make one right upper corner clip & flip unit.
~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-short edge at the top, make one left upper corner clip & flip unit.

~Using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D (left corner), a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B (right corner), and a 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric A-long edge at the top, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit.

-------------------------

~Place 2 1/2" sq. of Fabrics B and D right sides together. Stitch from corner to corner. Trim, flip & press. You will have one 2 1/2" half square triangle.
~Place a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric D in the (B) corner of this HST, right sides together. Stitch from corner to corner. Trim, flip & press.

~Assemble as shown below. Label as Part 8 and set aside.

Block Assembly: Assemble Parts 1-8, along with your extra background pieces, as according to the diagram below.




 You should now have an 18 1/2" McG Kitty block! :D 😼
