National Red Mitten Day Quilt Block Tutorial

Happy National Red Mitten Day!

I told myself I was going to take a break from my National Days scrap quilt project for a few days... but then I realized that today is National Red Mitten Day. My quilt HAS to have a red mitten!

It actually took longer to draw up a red mitten, and figure the math, than it took to cut and sew! It's a challenge trying to keep all of the blocks 8". I stitched it out of my stash of Riley Blake basics (kisses, hashtags & stripe).

Here's how it goes together.

Background:
(1) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 2" sq. (**)
(1) 2 x 2 1/2"
(1) 2 x 8 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2" sq. (***)
(1) 2 1/2 x 4"

Main Mitten:
(1) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2 x 5"
(1) 3 1/2 x 5"

Stripe and Cuff:
(2) 2 x 5"

There are two clip & flip methods used, but other than that, this block goes together quickly and is scrap friendly like the others. 🙌

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

~Using above method, a 3 1/2 x 5" rect. of main mitten fabric-long edge at the top, and (2) 2" sq. of background fabric, make one double upper corner clip & flip unit.

Left Upper/Right Lower Double

1. Place a square at the left end or upper left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or lower right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

~Using above method, a 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" rect. of main mitten fabric-long edge at the top, a 2 1/2" sq. (left upper corner) and a 1 1/2" sq. (right lower corner) of background fabric, make one left upper/right lower corner clip & flip unit.

Assemble according to the diagram below for an 8 1/2" (8" finished) mitten block!

I hope you enjoy stitching it up if you make one! My little collection has grown to four blocks now. I have another block in mind that's coming up so I'll probably be back with another one of these blocks in a couple of days. In the meantime, I'll be rummaging around my scraps for just the right colors. 🖍🖍🖍

You can find the other block tutorials *here*, or you can click on the tutorials tab up in the top menu bar and scroll down to "National Days Blocks". I made a page so I can keep them organized and linked it there. If you make any of these with me along the way, and post any pictures, please tag me so I can see! @kellifanninquilts on IG or my FB page *here*

Be back soon! Happy Stitching!

xoxo

You got me to look ahead at all the "national" days coming up. Is it Sardine day that you are looking forward to? Haha! Or Flossing day? LOL! What a silly list. Thanks for the laugh this morning. :)

I made the mitten yesterday...very cute! Thanks for the tute!

How cute! A pair of red mittens would be really cute on a table runner or something.
