National Soda Day Quilt Block Tutorial

Did you know that November 19th is "National Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine Day"? Me neither! But it is. According to the National Days Calendar. Which has a day for basically everything you can imagine! So I thought it'd be super fun to attempt a soda block. Here she is! This one was really fun! 🎉

It has a few small clip & flip units, but it's totally doable, and scrap friendly, which is my main goal for these blocks.

Here's how I put it together.

National Soda Day Quilt Block:
..well technically "Carbonated Beverage with Caffeine" but that's a long name for a block.

Fabric A (background):
(7) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(2) 1 1/2 x 4"
(2) 3 x 7 1/2"

Fabric B (bottle):
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (##)
(4) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" (***)
(1) 2 x 3 1/2"

Fabric C (label):
(1) 3 x 3 1/2"

Fabric D (bottle ring):
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (##)

Fabric E (straw):
(1) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)

~Using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a 2 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, and the method below, make one double upper corners clip & flip unit.

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

Assemble block parts as shown below and you'll have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) soda bottle block!

The striped straw is my favorite! And the label would work for fussy cutting! Now I'm thinking I need bottles in all the colors. Green and yellow for Mountain Dew.. Dark brown for Root Beer.. Okay I'll stop now. 🤣

I'm not going to be making a National Day block every single day, only when one of the days inspires a block. But you can find past ones on the tutorial page by clicking the tab at the top menu bar or by clicking *here*. I'll link the posts there so I can keep track of them. I'm looking forward to drawing new ones and having enough at some point to have a scrap quilt of National Days.

If you want to read more about this particular National Day, you can find info *HERE*.

If you try any of the blocks, and post pictures, I'd love to see! You can tag me @kellifanninquilts on IG or #nationaldaysquiltblocks. Or come find my FB page, *HERE*

I'll be back soon with the Fang block for the Harry Potter Sew Along. I'm still dicing him up.

Until then, Happy Stitching!

xoxo
