How to Stitch the State of Missouri

This might seem an odd block to include in my National Days scrap quilt, but my parents currently live in Missouri, and we have plans to move there in a couple of years so it's the perfect fit. And today is National Missouri Day!

Fun Missouri Facts
Home of MO Star Quilt Company & Quilting is My Therapy.
Capital: Jefferson City
The Arch in St. Louis is the tallest man made National Monument in the U.S.
St. Joseph MO was the starting point of the Pony Express.

I'm sure there are lots of other fun facts, but let's get to the cutting.

Here's how I made this block.

Fabric A (background):
(4) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2" sq.

Fabric B (state):
(3) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" (***)
(1) 2 1/2 x 5 1/2"
(2) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"

Fabric C (capitol):
(1) 1 1/2" sq. (*)

Right Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or right upper  corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

~Using the above method, a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 1 1/2 x 8 1/2" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one right upper corner clip & flip.

~Repeat using 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-LONG edge at the top.

=====================

Assemble the state of Missouri as shown below, using scant quarter inch seams. It will be an 8 1/2" (8" finished) block like all of the others.

====================

Here's how my block turned out using some batik scraps.
I like it in the colorful batiks! I'm going to link this post along with all of the other National Days blocks on their page, *HERE*. If you stitch one up, I'd love to see! I'm using the hashtag, #nationaldaysquiltblocks over on Instagram. Tag me if you post one! Be back soon!

Happy Saturday & Happy Stitching!

xoxo

I knew right away it was Missouri. I grew up in Kansas City in the 60s and 70s. Fun block.

Great block. We are also thinking of moving to Missouri at some time. Lovely state. I have several quilting friends in Missouri. Oh yea, Northwest Missouri State in Maryville is a great college. Our oldest son went there.
