Football Quilt Block

Hi there! Happy Monday! I'm back with another block for my National Days scrap quilt. Guess what day it is today? Hint: The Super Bowl was yesterday. 🏈

So when I was looking at the National Days calendar and noticed today is National Football Hangover Day, of course, I thought it would be fun to have a football block in my quilt. Especially since this year the 49ers (I live about an hour and a half from San Francisco!) and the Chiefs (my bro. and parents live in MO!) were in the Super Bowl. A football block with memories!

So off I went to find brown scraps. (I really don't have very many brown scraps!)

Here's how this football quilt block goes together. (I really can't believe there is actually a National Football Hangover Day!) Oh yeah! Don't forget to use scant quarter inch seams!

Fabric A (background):
(1) 2 x 8 1/2"
(4) 2 1/2" sq.

Fabric B (football):
(4) 1" sq. (>)
(4) 1 x 1 1/4" (~)
(2) 1 x 5 1/2"
(2) 1 1/2 x 5 1/2"
(2) 2 1/4 x 4 1/2"

Fabric C (stitching/stripes):
(2) 1" sq. (>)
(2) 1 x 1 1/4" (~)
(3) 1 x 2" (>>)
(2) 1 x 5 1/2"

Fabric D (grass):
(1) 2 x 8 1/2"

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

~Stitch strip set together as shown below. Repeat for total of two.

~Using the double upper corners clip & flip method, (2) 2 1/2" sq. of Fabric A & your prepared strip sets, make two units.

~Assemble block as shown below.

You will have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) football block! 🎉🏈📣 Here's how mine turned out:

I kind of goofed. Woops!! Did you notice? One of the stitch pieces is out of order and I didn't notice until I was all done! So the stitching on the football isn't even. I'll just pretend it's a Charlie Brown football. 😏 Oh well! I'm leaving it. As my friend, Beth says, perfection is overrated. And finished is better than perfect. ha! There's no quilt police here!
If you're following along or making any of these National Days blocks, come find me on IG @kellifanninquilts, or come join the sew along group on my FB page! The rest of the blocks so far can be found *HERE*, or by clicking on the button in the right side bar. This block is #25 of 144! There is still no noticeable dent in my scraps, but hopefully by the end there will be! At least I'm using up some of them right? haha!

Thanks for popping in to visit today! Be back soon! Have a great week!

Happy Stitching!

xoxo

This is a wonderful block. Your block is wonderful. If you look at a football they are not perfect. Even brand new ones. So your fits right in. :)

I love your pattern! But what if I need a 6 1/2" (6" finished) block? Can you help me?
Thank you so much for any thoughts!
