Dr. Seuss Inspired Quilt Block Tutorial
6:00 AM
Happy National Read Across America Day! Also celebrated as Dr. Seuss's birthday. This week is our school's Family Literacy Night and this year it's kind of a birthday party for Dr. Seuss, so this block is perfect timing! What's more iconic than the hat from The Cat in the Hat? This quilt block is a super simple block, just a couple of squares and some rectangles, and will make a fun addition to my National Days scrap quilt.
Fabric A (background):
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(2) 2 1/2 x 5 1/2"
Fabric B (red):
(3) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2"
Fabric C (white):
(2) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 1 1/2 x 6 1/2"
Assemble block as shown below, using scant quarter inch seams, and you will have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) Cat in the Hat (inspired) quilt block!
....................
Here is how my Cat in the Hat inspired quilt block turned out for National Read Across America Day. It's pictured with my son's favorite Dr. Seuss book from when he was a baby, There's a Wocket in my Pocket - Dr. Seuss's Book of Ridiculous Rhymes. It's a little worse for the wear because it was read A LOT!
The rhyming in it is so genius and fun to read aloud! I had that book memorized. I read it to him so much, if he was crying in his car seat in the car, sometimes I would just start reciting it from memory and he would stop and frown and listen, fascinated by the rhyming words. 💗💗💗
Then when he was a toddler and we started going to story-time at our local library, I learned, from our favorite librarian, that the ability to recognize rhyme is an early literacy skill. I also read one time that a high percentage of illiterate prisoners don't recognize rhyme. And if they receive literacy help, they are way less likely to reoffend.

#readtoallthebabies! Reading really is fundamental!
Anyway, sorry to veer off onto a literacy tangent. It's a subject that's close to my heart.
If you're just finding these blocks, you can see all 33 of them so far, *HERE*, on the National Days quilt blocks page where I'm keeping all of them linked and organized. If you make a Cat's hat and post on social media, come find me and tag me on IG, @kellifanninquilts.. I'd love to see. Or come post it in the sew along group on my FB page so we can all see!
I'll be back soon! I'm off to do all the things! So much to do.
Have a great week and Happy Stitching!
xoxo

What a fun block Kelli! My kids love those books and I remember making hats for my older two for world book day a few years ago!
