National Napping Day Quilt Block Tutorial

It's National Napping Day! Er.. at least it was, back on March 9th, when my world went into a holding pattern. I had lined up all of the March days that I wanted to do National Days quilt blocks to represent, at the start of the month. But lots of life went down, and I found myself stuck in a funk and they didn't get done. But I still want to do them. So, onward! Here's a tribute to March 9th and National Napping Day. I haven't sewn mine yet, but I'm hoping just getting this posted will help get me back in the groove and eventually caught up.

Who doesn't love a good nap! :D Stay tuned at the end, I've mocked up the quilt with the blocks I have done so far.

But first, I'll show you how to make this scrappy, snooze-y block.

Fabric A (background):
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(2) 2" sq.
(2) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 3"
(1) 2 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 3" sq.
(1) 4 x 4 1/2"

Fabric B (large Z):
(2) 1 1/2 x 4"
(1) 2 1/2 x 4"

Fabric C (middle Z):
(2) 1 1/2 x 3"
(1) 2 x 3"

Fabric D (smallest Z):
(3) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)

Left Upper/Right Lower Double

1. Place a square at the left end or upper left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or lower right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

~Using the above method, (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a --- rect. of Fabric B, make one unit.

~Repeat using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a === rect. of Fabric C.

~Repeat using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A and a -=- rect. of Fabric D.

~Assemble as shown below, using scant quarter inch seams.

...................

You will have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) napping block. Happy National Napping Day! I hope you snuck a short nap in today. :)

And now, like I mentioned at the top, here is how far I've come so far, after I plugged my block designs into the final layout. It will be 12 blocks x 12 blocks, with a 1" sashing between, so that it ends up at 109" sq. for a king size bed. I haven't decided on a sashing color, yet, I just plugged in the pink so I could see what the layout looked like.

I am officially 1/4 of the way done with the blocks I need for this king size quilt! This is going to be one crazy giant sampler.

I have no idea what blocks are going to make up the rest of the quilt, past the ones I had planned for March. I'll have to look up possibilities for April and now, May. I usually only look ahead a few days at a time, at most a month, so it's all a surprise to me, too. But it's been a lot of fun, more fun than I expected, and I was enjoying the process, up until the skin cancer/world pandemic funk I suddenly found myself in. If you're following along, I hope you are enjoying watching them stack up, too. I'll be back soon with another block of some sort, hopefully soon!

I'll link this block up over on the National Days quilt blocks page, with all of the other block links. This is number 36!

Stay safe and stay healthy!

Happy Stitching!

xoxo

I just made a nap quilt a couple of weeks ago. This block will make an adorable pillow to go along with it. Thanks for sharing your tutorial!!

Glad you are okay. I did wonder about why you stopped posting, but figured your family was occupying all your time. I should have made an effort to check in with you. Be safe.

I've missed you Kelli, glad to see you are back, these connections we make are unknown to people 50 years ago-which includes me. I've had several serious bouts with the skin cancers
(skin grafts et al). I'm forever saying stay in the shade and wear a hat. Don't think my husband totally understands the phrase "I'm done with getting pieces of me cut out".
This Covid 19 is a killer and I'm willing to do whatever to stay safe-I'm not nearly ready to leave my stash to someone( or 3 &4 ) else. Stay on this side gal. I love your humor and your patterns. Feel free to rant out to us, we're here for you.

Being just a little challenged in this department, can you tell me how to enlarge this pattern say to least a 16 inch block. I want to put it in the middle of a baby quilt!! Love all your designs!

WOO HOO! You have really made my day with your news. I have seriously missed seeing your creative posts - have checked nearly every day (know that you were really missed & thought of often). So glad to see & know that you are on the up & up - cheers to the sewing part now!

I was fixing to contact you to make sure you were ok. I finally found some Sew Chatty fabric. It arrived earlier this week. Now to find time to recover my ironing board with some of it.
