April Fools Day Quilt Block Tutorial

Hey guys! Well, 2020 keeps throwing curves, doesn't it? This week, my best friend of nine years now? (since our kids were in pre-k together, and they're 13!), was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She's basically the sister I never had, the Ethel to my Lucy, the Shirley to my Laverne. Please, please pray for her and her family if you're so inclined. She's currently waiting to see an oncologist at UCD to formulate a treatment plan. They won't know the staging or prognosis until she has surgery. I've just been in a fog about it the last several days. She's devastated, obviously, and her hub and daughters are grappling with the news and we're all just sick over it. But, today, in an effort to distract myself, I'm going to try to post another National Day quilt block tutorial.

This one is for April 1st, or April Fools Day. I knew I wanted an April Fools Day block in my quilt, but I really had no idea how to translate that. So I set out googling a while back, and decided on making a Joker's Hat. Following is a Joker's Hat quilt block tutorial!

This one is a challenge, and has quilt a bit of clip & flip, some odd sizes, and lots of pieces, but all straight seams! I like blocks where, if you can sew a straight seam, you can do it! In the end I'm happy with it! It just might take a little longer. But the good news is it can use up some smaller scraps!

Here's how it goes together.

Fabric A (background):
(7)1 1/4" sq. (+)
(2) 1 1/4 x 1 1/2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 2 1/2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 3"
(2) 1 1/2 sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2"
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 3/4"
(4) 1 3/4" sq. (>)
(1) 2" sq.
(1) 2 1/4 x 2 3/4"
(1) 2 1/2 x 2 3/4"

Fabric B (gold):
(3) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(8) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 3/4 x 8 1/2"

Fabric C (blue):
(1) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 3/4 x 2 3/4"
(1) 1 3/4 x 3 3/4"
(1) 2 1/4" sq.

Fabric D (green):
(1) 1 1/4 x 2"
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 5 1/2"
(1) 1 3/4" sq. (>)

Fabric E (red):
(2) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 3/4 x 2 1/2"
(1) 1 3/4 x 2 3/4"
(1) 2 x 2 1/2"

  • Using the above method, (2) 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A, and a 1 1/4 x 2" rect. of Fabric D-long edge at the top, make one unit.
  • Using same method, a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A-left upper corner, 1 3/4" sq. of Fabric A-right upper corner, and a 1 3/4 x 3 3/4" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top, make one unit.

  • Using same method, (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A, and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-long edge at the top, make one unit. Repeat for total of two of these units.
  • Using same method, (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B, and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric E-long edge at the top, make one unit.
  • Using same method, 1 3/4" sq. of Fabric A-left upper corner, 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A-right upper corner, and 1 3/4 x 2 3/4" rect. of Fabric E-long edge at the top, make one unit.
  • Using same method, (2) 1" sq. of Fabric E, and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one unit.
  • Using same method, (2) 1 3/4" sq. of Fabric A, and 1 3/4 x 8 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, make one unit.

....................

That should do it for the clipping and flipping. Assemble your block as shown below. You should have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) Joker's Hat!

I'll be back, hopefully soon with another National Day block tutorial. In the meantime, please keep my friend in your prayers. I've kind of been absent on my social media for a while, and that is one of the reasons.

If you're just finding these National Days quilt block tutorials, and want to see the first 40-ish of them, you can see them all, and find the links to their tutorials *HERE*. If you post them on social media, come find me @kellifanninquilts on IG, or at my FB page, *HERE*, or in the sew along group on my FB page, *HERE*. You can see lots of blocks there, and also lots of blocks and quilts from the Harry Potter, Minecraft, and Pokemon sew alongs.

Thanks for popping in to read today.

Happy Stitching!

xoxo

It looks like you and I both have been missing from the blog world for a month. Hope you are doing well.

Hoping she gets some good news and is restored to health!
Fun new block... very creative as always!

I'm so sorry about your dear friends diagnosis. Hopefully (by now) she has lots of information, and can make clear decisions about her treatments. I'll be praying for her (and you too, since you've had a really hard year).
