Seriously..I think it needs stitches.: Pencil Quilt Block Tutorial

When I started sketching a pencil block for my National Days scrap quilt (National Pencil Day was on Mar. 30), I decided to do it a little differently since I had already done *this pencil block* for National Handwriting Day back in January (its tutorial is *here*). Plus, I've done two colored pencil patterns already, Color Outside the Lines, and Color Outside the Lines Mini. So to change it up, I did a pencil jar on a desk!

It might be a bit unconventional but it uses pretty small scraps. Which was one of the main goals of this quilt, using up the scraps!

Here's how this pencil jar block goes together.

Fabric A (background):
(1) 1 x 1 3/4"
(1) 1 x 2"
(2) 1 x 2 1/2"
(1) 1 x 3 1/2"
(2) 2 1/2 x 2 3/4"
(2) 3 1/4 x 4 1/2"

Fabric B (desk):
(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(1) 1 x 4"
(2) 2 1/2 x 2 3/4"

Fabric C (pencil jar):
(1) 4" sq.

Fabric D (pencils):
(1) 1" sq. (~)
(2) 1 x 2"
(1) 1 x 2 1/2"
(1) 1 x 2 3/4"

Fabric E (erasers):
(5) 1" sq. (~)

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

Using above method, (2) 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric B and 4" sq. of Fabric C, make one unit.

Assemble block as shown below. You will have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) pencil cup block for National Pencil Day. Or for your favorite teacher, or accountant, etc.✎

Your block should look like this. But you might use a lot more creativity with the colors. :) I like the look of the good old #2 pencils for mine this time.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again. This whole National Days scrap quilt project has been a lot more fun and a lot more challenging creatively than I ever expected! For my king size quilt of 8" blocks, I need 144 and I want them all to be different so I have had to pick some days that were not necessarily what I would typically think of as a quilt block. It's been interesting. ha!
