Seriously..I think it needs stitches.: Mother Goose Quilt Block Tutorial

Happy Thursday! The weeks fly by these days.

I have another block/tutorial for my National Days scrap quilt project today. This time it's Mother Goose. National Mother Goose Day was on May 1st. Here's what my Mother Goose block looks like.

Did you read Mother Goose as a kid? Read them to your kids? We read some of them to our son, out of my hub's old Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes book that my MIL had saved. I found this awesome website with all the Mother Goose info you could imagine --> HERE. There are so many that I didn't realize were Mother Goose.. Itsy Bitsy Spider.. This little piggy went to market, this little piggy stayed home.. I'm a little teapot..

So my mother goose block uses six colors, and the usual clip & flip corners.

Here's how she goes together.

Fabric A (background):

(3) 1" sq. (~)

(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)

(1) 1 1/4 x 2"

(1) 1 1/4 x 4 1/2"

(2) 1 3/4 x 2 1/2"

(1) 1 3/4 x 3 1/2"

(1) 2 x 5 1/2"

(1) 2 1/2 x 3 1/4"

(1) 3 1/4 x 3 1/2"

Fabric B (hat):

(1) 1 x 4 1/4"

(1) 1 x 4 1/2"

(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)

(2) 1 3/4 x 2"

Fabric C (ribbon):

(1) 1 x 2 1/2"

(1) 1 x 3 3/4"

(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)

(1) 1 1/4 x 4 1/2"

Fabric D (goose):

(1) 1 x 1 1/4" (@)

(1) 1 x 2 3/4"

(1) 1 1/4" sq. (+)

(1) 1 1/4 x 1 3/4"

(1) 1 1/4 x 3 3/4"

(1) 1 3/4" sq.

(1) 1 3/4 x 3 3/4"

(1) 2 1/4 x 2 1/2"

Fabric E (beak):

(1) 1 1/4" sq. (+)

(1) 1 1/2" sq. (*)

(1) 1 1/2 x 3 1/4"

Fabric F (eye):

(1) 1" sq. (~)

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

*Using the above method, a 1" sq. of Fabric A-left upper corner, a 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A-right upper corner, and 1 3/4 x 2" rect. of Fabric B-short edge at the top, make one unit.

*Using the above method, a 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A-left upper corner, a 1" sq. of Fabric A-right upper corner, and 1 3/4 x 2" rect. of Fabric B-short edge at the top, make one unit.

*Using the above method, (2) 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric C, and 2 1/4 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-long (2 1/2") edge at the top, make one unit.

Left Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or left upper corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

*Using above method, 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric B and 1 3/4 x 3 3/4" rect. of Fabric D-short edge at the top, make one unit.

*Using 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric E and 1 1/4 x 2" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one unit.

*Using 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/2 x 3 1/4" rect. of Fabric E-short edge at the top, make one unit.

*Using 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric B and 1 1/4 x 1 3/4" rect. of Fabric D-LONG edge at the top, make one unit.

*Using 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric E and 1 3/4" sq. of Fabric D, make one unit.

*Using 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric D and 1 3/4 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one unit.

Assemble your Mother Goose block as shown below, using scant quarter inch seams.

She should look like this, and be 8 1/2" square at this point. 8" when finished in quilt.

Cool block!!! I must admit, when I read the instructions and saw the dreaded one inch measurement, I let out a huge sigh. This block is so cute, I may have to overcome my dislike of skinny pieces. Thanks for sharing.
