Planet Earth Quilt Block Tutorial

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Or belated Earth Day since it was back on April 22. But better late than never and here is my Planet Earth block that I'm making for my National Days scrap quilt project!

There are quite a few clip and flip corners, but if you've made any of these blocks, you're used to that by now. ha! The sizes are pretty standard though. There aren't any pieces smaller than a 1 1/2" sq. which makes me happy!

Here's how to go stitched earth. 🔥🌎😉

Fabric A (background):
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(2) 2 1/2" sq.

Fabric B (water):
(9) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2 x 5 1/2"

Fabric C (land):
(5) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 4 1/2"
(1) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

*Using the above method, (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 2 1/2 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top, make one unit.

*Repeat using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 3 1/2 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top. **TURN this unit around so the the Fabric B clip & flipped corners are on the bottom, and place a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A, right sides together, in the left upper corner of this unit. Stitch from corner to corner. Trim, flip & press. You will have the unit shown below.

--------------------

Right Lower Clip & Flip

1. Place square at lower end or right lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

*Using the above method, a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B, and a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric A-long edge at the top, make one unit.

*Repeat using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and a 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top.

*Repeat using a 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric C and 2 1/2 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-short edge at the top.

Left Lower/Right Upper Double

1. Place a square at the left end or lower left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.

4. Place a square at the right end or upper right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

*Using above method, 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B-left lower corner, 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric A-right upper corner, and 2 1/2" sq. of Fabric C, make one unit.

*Repeat using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric C and 2 1/2 x 5 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top.

---------------------

*Using above method and 2 1/2" sq. of Fabrics A and B, make one half square triangle unit. *REPEAT for total of two of these units. (These units are marked with a star in the assembly diagram below.)

---------------------

Assemble block as shown below, using scant quarter inch seams. You should have an 8 1/2" (8" finished) Planet Earth quilt block.

HAPPY BELATED EARTH DAY!

I have mocked up my quilt layout so that I could see how much it is filling in. This is where I'm at so far. Earth is block #56.

I hope you had a good week and have a great weekend! As always, if you make any of these blocks and post them on social media, come find me and tag me so I can see. :) It's a lot of fun to see your creativity! You can find me at these places: @kellifanninquilts on IG, or at my FB page, *HERE*, or in the sew along group on my FB page, *HERE*. You can also find lots of MinecraftPokemon, and Harry Potter blocks in the sew along group on FB. I'll link this post up over on the National Days page, where I'm keeping all of the blocks organized.

See you soon with another block. Hope you're all staying well! We are still having crazy wildfires in CA. My FIL lives in Sonoma County and had to hastily evacuate the other night. It was scary but he's okay, and his house is okay as far as we know. Counting our blessings! 2020 and its many curve balls. 😖

Thanks for dropping in. Take care, and Happy Stitching!

xoxo
