Nurses Day Quilt Stethoscope Quilt Block Tutorial

Welcome back! Today I have a fun stethoscope quilt block to share in honor of National Nurses Day which was on May 6th, for my National Day scrap quilt project.

The first thing to come to my mind for a block was a red cross on a nurse's hat, but then nurse's don't really wear the hats. Well.. they wear many "hats" at once but  the only time we ever wore our hats was at our graduation. So I decided to try to draw a stethoscope and I'm glad I did! I love this stethoscope block!

Some skinny strips involved again, but if you're sewing along, maybe you're used to them by now. :) We'll all be pros at them when this project is done.

I think this block would make a really cute tote, or even lap quilt.

This is how the stethoscope block goes together.

Fabric A (background):
(6) 1" sq. (~)
(4) 1 x 1 3/4"
(1) 1 x 2 1/2" (>>)
(2) 1 1/4 x 2 1/4"
(3) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 2 1/4"
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 4"
(2) 1 3/4" sq.
(1) 1 3/4 x 3 1/4"
(4) 2" sq.
(1) 2 x 2 1/2"
(6) 2 1/4" sq.
(1) 2 1/4 x 4 1/2"

Fabric B (lighter gray):
(2) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(2) 1 x 1 3/4"
(1) 1 x 2"
(2) 2 1/2" sq.

Fabric C (stethoscope color):
(1) 1 x 1 1/4" (@)
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(1) 1 x 1 1/4"
(1) 1 x 1 3/4"
(2) 2 1/4" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 2 3/4"

Fabric D (darker gray):
(2) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(1) 1 x 2 1/2" (>>)

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

*Using the above method, (2) 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 x 2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, make one unit.

*Repeat using (2) 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 x 1 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-long edge at the top. Be sure to flip & clip first corner before sewing second corner. You're basically making a tiny flying geese unit. Repeat for total of two of these units.

thank you for another wonderful block

A fellow nurse?? Yippee! This block is awesome. I make a quilt to give away during Nurses Week at my hospital. I’m going to get busy after the first of the year and make a lap quilt with this block. Thank you so much!
