Seriously..I think it needs stitches.: Star Wars Tie Fighter Quilt Block Tutorial

Hi, stitchy friends!

I'm so excited to share this TIE FIGHTER quilt block tutorial for my National Days scrap quilt! It's, of course, for National Star Wars Day, which was on May 4th. May the 4th be with you sewing up this tiny TF! 🌠 Even though it's November! haha I think this little block would make a super cute tote bag for a Star Wars fan. Possibly even a cute army of TIE Fighters quilt. Hmm..

This block has some small pieces and, and if you're like me, you're not a huge fan of super tiny pieces.. but it's necessary sometimes when trying to draw these blocks but make them fit into eight inches. Plus ~bright side~ it uses up those smaller scraps!

Here's how to make a tiny TIE Fighter.

Fabric A (background):

(5) 1" sq. (~)

(4) 1 x 1 1/4" (@)

(8) 1 1/4" sq. (+)

(2) 2 x 8 1/2"

(2) 3 1/4 x 4 1/2"

Fabric B (Tie Fighter):

(4) 1" sq. (~)

(4) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)

(2) 1 x 7"

(2) 1 1/4 x 1 1/2"

(4) 1 1/2" sq. (*)

Left Lower Clip & Flip

1. Place square at lower end or left lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

*Using above method, 1" sq. of Fabric B and 1 x 1 1/4" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one unit.

--Repeat for total of two of these units.

Right Lower Clip & Flip

1. Place square at lower end or right lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.

*Using the above method, 1" sq. of Fabric B and 1 x 1 1/4" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top, make one unit.

--Repeat for total of two of these units.

Left Upper/Right Lower Double

1. Place a square at the left end or upper left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or lower right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

*Using above method, 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A-left upper corner, 1" sq. of Fabric A-right lower corner, and 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B, make one unit.

--Repeat for total of four of these units.

*Assemble your Tie Fighter block as shown below, using scant quarter inch seams. Your block will be 8 1/2" at this point. 8" when finished, in quilt.

I hope you love your block. This block has some special meaning behind it, too. I volunteer to help plan Family Literacy Night at my son's school every year, and a in 2017 it was Star Wars themed.

It was so much fun, the kids loved it, and my book bestie's (fellow mom and library enthusiast) hub built a giant AT-AT for us! Here it is in the background. (That's my son signing up for his first public library card at the end of the night!) He used plywood, cardboard, and lots of paper plates and egg cartons, etc. And gray paint!

I designed these book bags for the kids to use to collect books from the free book exchange, too. We start asking for parents (and kids) to donate their outgrown books about a month before, and then we put them all out on tables for the kids to "shop" for new-to-them books.

I've actually been sad lately, as it's my son's last year at this school, and it was going to be our last year to plan Literacy Night together. We were already brain storming and making plans, but now it won't be happening b/c of covid.. :( So many good times and good memories!! Anyway, that's my Star Wars Day block for my National Days scrap quilt! It will be a nod to our fun Literacy Night memories!

I've said it before and I have to say it again. This project is turning out to be such a design challenge! It's also helping me to be more comfortable with piecing those smaller bits of fabric.

Such a tiny Tye Fighter. It's sad all the things that Covid is preventing us from participating in. Events like your son's literacy night, weddings, funerals, etc.
