National Sewing Machine Day



Hello! I finally made it back to post this tutorial for the sewing machine block I designed for National Sewing Machine Day (which was/is in June) in written form. For my National Days quilt. In case you missed it, I shared it in video form in my last post. I'm still whistling that jingle. haha! Anyway, onward!








Fabric A (background):
(2) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 7"
(1) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(1) 1 1/4 x 2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 2 1/2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 3 3/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 5 1/2"
(1) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(1) 2 x 3"


Fabric B (thread)
(1) 1 1/4 x 1 1/2"


Fabric C (table)
(1) 1 1/4 x 8 1/2"


Fabric D (heart)
(2) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)


Fabric E (needle)
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)


Fabric F (sewing machine):
(2) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 3"
(1) 1 x 3 3/4"
(1) 1 1/4 x 3"
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 3/4 x 2 1/2"
(1) 1 3/4 x 3"
(1) 2 1/2" sq.
(1) 2 1/2 x 7 1/4"
(1) 2 3/4 x 3 1/2"










Left Upper Clip & Flip

1. Place square at upper end or left upper corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower  corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.





--Using 1" sq. of Fabric A and 2 3/4 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric F-short edge at the top, make one unit.

Left Lower/Right Upper Double

1. Place a square at the left end or lower left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or upper right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.






--Using 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric F-left lower corner, 1" sq. of Fabric F-right upper corner, and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-SHORT edge at the top, make one unit.

Left Upper/Right Lower Double

1. Place a square at the left end or upper left corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or lower right corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from right upper corner to left lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.







--Using 1" sq. of Fabric F-left upper corner, 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric F-right lower corner, and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric D-SHORT edge at the top, make one unit.

--Assemble as shown below, using scant  quarter inch seams. Assemble sections in red boxes first, then assemble following the numbered arrows.






You should have an 8 1/2" sewing machine quilt block, 8" finished in quilt.

Because this block had sooo many pieces and not your typical sizes, I wanted to be sure it was all understandable and doable from a video, so Amy tested it for me using youtube. Then she made a few more. The cutest scrappy sewing machines! 



Oh! And I mocked up a quilt of them to see what they would look like as a one block quilt.

Thanks for the pattern. I think I'll use this pattern for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge next year. It will make a fun quilt.
