Camera Quilt Block Tutorial
11:29 AM
Hi there! I thought I'd post another National Days quilt block tutorial today for my National Days scrap quilt project. On my list of blocks, I'm up to National Camera Day, which was in June.
It was a challenge to figure out a way to make it look like a camera and still be able to incorporate a bit of colorful print/scraps. But I think it looks enough like a camera. I had drawn it a lot more detailed but then went back and tried to simplify it. Here's how it goes together..
Fabric A - Background
(4) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(1) 1 1/2 x 4"
(2) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(2) 2 x 6 1/2"
Fabric B - Colorful Band
(1) 1" sq. (~)
(4) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 2 x 3"
(1) 2 x 3 1/2"
Fabric C - Black Camera
(2) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 2 1/2" (>>)
(2) 1 x 6 1/2"
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" (***)
Fabric D - White Lens/Flash
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(1) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
Fabric E - Red Button
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
Double Upper Corners
1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.
--Using above method, (2) 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top, make one unit.
--Repeat steps using (2) 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 x 6 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top.
--Repeat steps using (2) 1 1/2" sq. of Fabric B and 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top. Repeat for total of two of these units.
--------------------
(correction note: The 2 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric B that is directly under the red Fabric E piece, should be labeled 2 x 3", NOT 2 x 3 1/2".)
You'll have an 8 1/2" (8" finished in quilt) camera quilt block!
I thought it'd be fun to mock up a camera quilt to see what it might look like.
I'm on the fence. I think some of the other blocks make cuter one block quilts. But I can see this being a fun gift for a photographer.
Thanks for dropping in to visit! I'll be back soon with the next National Days quilt block! The next on my list is National Social Media Day. It is the last June block then it's onto July! Which has a few fun blocks. Well on my way to the 144 goal now for this king size scrap quilt! I've plugged them into the template I made just to see the progress..
It probably looks crazy to you but I'm loving the craziness of it! haha
Okay, I'm off! See you soon!
Happy Stitching!
xoxo,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*, if you're looking for any of the other 90 or so blocks I've posted so far. If you know someone who loves Minecraft, Pokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!
xx
