Father's Day DAD Quilt Block Tutorial

Well, I did a Mom block for Mother's Day, a "bro" block for Brother's Day, so I had to do a DAD block for Father's Day. (And I'm sure I'll do a sis block soon, too.) :) Compared to the Garfield quilt block, this one will be a piece of cake! Ooh cake reminds me of the cake block, I love the cake block! This National Days scrap quilt project has been so challenging and fun. I'm so happy to be working at it again! Here is June's DAD block.

Here's how it goes together.

Fabric A - background
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(1) 1 x 1 3/4" (>>)
(2) 1 x 2 1/2" (>>>)
(6) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(2) 1 1/2 x 4"
(1) 2 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(1) 3 x 8 1/2"

Fabric B - letter "D"
(2) 1 x 1 1/4" (++)
(2) 1 1/4 x 4"

Fabric C - Letter "A"
(1) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 1/4 x 2 1/2"
(2) 1 1/4 x 3 1/4"

Fabric D - letter "D"
(2) 1 x 1 1/4" (++)
(2) 1 1/4 x 4"

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

--Using above method, (2) 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/4 x 4" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, make one unit.

--Repeat using (2) 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/4 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top.

--Repeat using (2) 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/4 x 4" rect. of Fabric D-long edge at the top.

Assemble block as shown below, being sure to use SCANT quarter inch seams. You will have an 8 1/2" sq. "DAD" quilt block. Or Father's Day quilt block. Or you could use it in any number of DAD gifts.. zip pouches.. hot pads for the BBQ.. apron pocket.. etc. The finished size of the block in your quilt or project will be 8" sq.

Also, I love blue and orange together.. *swoon*. I've been wanting to turn my Tools, Baby!! pattern into a MINI pattern using navy and orange prints. There is never enough time in the day for all the ideas! Especially when you wind up in the hospital for a month, unable to use your left hand! Grrr...

BUT thank God and all of you for your prayers, the strength in my hand continues to improve, and in the meantime, I'm getting pretty good at one hand typing! All those years of piano lessons are paying off in more ways than one! haha

Thanks for visiting today! I'll be back soon with another National Days quilt block! The next on my list is for Arizona Day.

Happy Stitching!

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.

I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*if you're looking for any of the other 90 or so blocks I've posted so far. Getting closer to my goal of 144 blocks! If you know someone who loves MinecraftPokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here.
