'LIKE" or Thumbs Up Quilt Block Tutorial
12:42 PM
Hi there! I wanted to share the last June block for my National Days scrap quilt project. Can you guess what day it's for? If you guessed National Social Media Day, you'd be correct! I had no idea social media had a day and spent a fair amount of time wondering what could represent it in quilt block form. Then I settled on the iconic "thumbs up". Which can also represent a thumbs up to quilting. :) Or any other exercise of creativity! This whole project has been a great big challenge and exercise in creativity!
Here's how to stitch a fabric "thumbs up".
Fabric A - Background
(4) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(1) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2" (****)
(1) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(1) 3 1/2 x 4"
(1) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"
Fabric B - Hand
(1) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 3 1/2" (***)
(1) 4 1/2" sq.
Fabric C - Cuff
(1) 2 1/2 x 4"
--Match the symbols (~,** etc.) in the cutting instructions to the symbols in the assembly instructions.
Right Lower Clip & Flip
1. Place square at lower end or right lower corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
--Using above method, 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, make one unit.
--Repeat steps using 1" sq. of Fabric B and 3 1/2 x 4" rect. of Fabric A-short edge at the top.
--Repeat steps using 1" sq. of Fabric A and 4 1/2" sq. of Fabric B. Repeat two additional corners, so that three of the four corners have corner flips.
--------------------
Stitch block together as shown below, being sure to use SCANT quarter inch seams.
You will have an 8 1/2" "thumbs up" quilt block for National Social Media Day. (8" finished in quilt)
Thumbs up for quilting! :)
That's it for now! I'll be back soon with the next National Days quilt block! This does it for the June blocks so next time, I'll be starting on the July blocks. It's been fun getting back to being creative!
See you soon and happy stitching!
xoxo,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*, if you're looking for any of the other 90 or so blocks I've posted so far. If you know someone who loves Minecraft, Pokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!
xx
