Ice Cream Quilt Block Tutorial
12:00 AM
My friend Julie has suggested I do an ice cream quilt design for a long time now, but there are a lot already out there and I didn't know how I'd do it any differently. Enter my National Days scrap quilt project and National Ice Cream Day. I HAD to do a scrap friendly ice cream block! But how to make it different? Then I remembered how I love soft serve! It was a huge treat when we were kids to stop at the Foster's Freeze when we went fishing or camping. So, I give you my Foster's Freeze cone! :) The swirly effect makes me happy!
It might look complicated, but it's really just one unit repeated.. except for the little swirl on top. That's just a single corner flip. So here's how it works.
Fabric A - Background
(11) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 1 1/4" (=)
(1) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(3) 2 x 3"
(1) 2 x 3 1/4"
(4) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"
Fabric B - Ice Cream
(1) 1 1/4 x 2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 3 1/4"
(4) 1 1/4 x 4 1/2"
Fabric C - Cone
(1) 2 x 3 1/2"
(1) 2 1/2" sq.

--Repeat these steps using (2) 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/4 x 4 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top. Repeat for total of four of these units.

You'll have an 8 1/2" square ice cream quilt block. (8" when finished in quilt.)
Hmm.. vanilla or chocolate? Or mixed? Remember that one? I love these!!
That's it for today. I'll be back very soon with more! Next on my list is National Moon Day. I'm looking forward to that one. Can't wait to show you!
Have a great day &
Happy Stitching!
xoxo,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*, if you're looking for any of the other 90 or so blocks I've posted so far. Getting closer to my goal of 144 blocks! If you know someone who loves Minecraft, Pokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!
xx

Wow! I love this! It is so realistic! So much so that I want to get a soft serve now! Yum! :) It's perfect for table runner for a kids party! Thank you for the pattern!
I love the hundreds and thousands on your Mr Whippy! Any chance of a flake to turn it into a 99?!
