Simple Airplane Quilt Block Tutorial
12:00 AM
Welcome back! We are about to fly into 2022! Today, I've finally made it all the way up to Aviation Day in my National Days scrap quilt project. National Aviation Day is on August 19th every year. I HAD to include this one in my project because my hub made a career out of being a pilot. So in honor of him, here is my airplane quilt block and its tutorial. 🛫
Before we get started, though, I have to share this pic of my hub flying. His co-pilot's wife was staying in a nearby hotel and knew what time they'd be taking off. She took this just as they took off. My hub is flying that plane! It's a kind of grainy cell phone pic that was texted to her hub who texted it to mine who texted it to me (not until AFTER they were done flying for the day because SAFETY!) and it was the most fun surprise!
Okay, this tutorial has been cleared for take-off. CORNY, I know, but I had to. haha
It's actually fairly simple. Not as many pieces as some of the other blocks in the past. Here's how it works.
Fabric A - Background
(2) 1" sq. (~)
(2) 2 3/4 x 4"
(2) 4 x 6 1/4" (I just noticed that I labeled this as "6 1/4 x 4" in the assembly.)
Fabric B - Plane
(2) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(2) 3 3/4" sq.
--Match the symbol (~) in the cutting instructions with the symbol in the assembly diagram.
Double Upper Corners
1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.
--Using above method, (2) 1" sq. of Fabric A and 1 1/2 x 8 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-SHORT edge at the top, make one unit.

Left Upper Clip & Flip
1. Place square at upper end or left upper corner of rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
--Using above method, 3 3/4" sq. of Fabric B and 6 1/4 x 4" rect. of Fabric A-LONG edge at the top, make one unit.
--Repeat steps, using 3 3/4" sq. of Fabric B and 6 1/4 x 4" rect. of Fabric A-SHORT edge at the top.
--Repeat steps, using 1" sq. of Fabric B and 2 3/4 x 4" rect. of Fabric A-SHORT edge at the top.
--Repeat steps, using 1" sq. of Fabric B and 2 3/4 x 4" rect. of Fabric A-LONG edge at the top.
--------------------
--Assemble this little airplane as shown below. Be sure to use SCANT quarter inch seams.
You'll have an 8 1/2" sq. airplane quilt block. (8" when finished in quilt.)
I decided to see what a large lap quilt would look like with only a few airplane blocks scattered.
Ehh.. I can't decide. Not loving. Not hating. But it's always fun to try it out!
Thanks for visiting today! See you with the next block soon. On deck is the block for Honey Bee Day. That block turned out really cute! Can't wait to share it!
Have a great day!
Happy Stitching,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*, if you're looking for any of the other 90 or so blocks I've posted so far. Getting closer to my goal of 144 blocks! If you know someone who loves Minecraft, Pokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!
xx
