Vinyl Record Quilt Block Tutorial for National Vinyl Record Day

Merry Thursday! :) I thought I'd celebrate Christmas Eve-eve with a little fabric music, a la this little vinyl record quilt block tutorial that I put together to represent National Vinyl Record Day in my National Days scrap quilt project. The actual day was in August and I'm still catching up.. but plugging along with the tutorials even though I can't sew right now. But look at this cute little baby! I remember having the Aristocats storybook, that came with a 45 vinyl record to listen along with, when I was a little girl. And I still have my parents Elvis vinyl records. :) Nostalgia. 💓

It's pretty simple. Here's how it works.. just a few corner flips.

Fabric A - Background
(1) 1" sq. (~)
(2) 1 1/2 x 6 1/2"
(2) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(4) 2" sq.

Fabric B - Black Record
(4) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(2) 2 x 3 1/2"
(2) 2 x 6 1/2"

Fabric C - Record Label
(2) 1 x 2"
(2) 1 3/4 x 3 1/2"

--Match the symbols (~,+ etc.) in the cutting instructions with the symbols in the assembly diagram.

Double Upper Corners

1. Place a square at the left end or left upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
2. Stitch from right upper to left lower corner.
3. Clip, flip & press.
4. Place a square at the right end or right upper corner of a rectangle or larger square, right sides together.
5. Stitch from left upper corner to right lower corner.
6. Clip, flip & press.

--Using above method, (2) 2" sq. of Fabric A and 2 x 6 1/2" rect. of Fabric B-long edge at the top, make one unit. --Repeat for total if two of these units.

--Repeat steps using (2) 1 1/4" sq. of Fabric B and 1 3/4 x 3 1/2" rect. of Fabric C-long edge at the top. --Repeat for total of two of these units.

--------------------

--Using SCANT quarter inch seams, assemble as shown below.

You will have an 8 1/2" square throwback to the 1970s. Or further! (8" finished in quilt.)

Thanks for visiting today. I hope you're enjoying the holiday season so far!

I'll leave you with this little 24" sq. vinyl mini quilt mockup. Happy Holidays!

Be back soon!

Happy Stitching,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
