Submarine Sandwich Quilt Block Tutorial for National Eat a Hoagie Day

Hello there! I hope your 2022 is off to a good start so far! I'm back today with another food quilt block tutorial for my National Days scrap quilt project. Today's block is a Hoagie!

The other day, I plugged all the food blocks into a quilt design together and OH.MY.GOODNESS. It's so fun! I'll share it at the end of this project. I reallly want to make that one!

First, let me show you how the hoagie goes together. It's a good one for those skinny strip scraps.

Fabric A - Background
(3) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(4) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 2 1/2 x 8 1/2"

Fabric B - Bread
(2) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"

Fabric C - Reds
(1) 1 x 6"
(1) 1 x 7 1/2"

Fabric D - Yellow
(1) 1 x 7 1/2"

Fabric E - Light Pink/Orange
(1) 1 x 5 1/2"

Fabric - Green
(2) 1 x 1/2" (>)
(2) 1 x 2"

--Match the symbols (~,*, etc.) in the cutting instructions with the symbols in the assembly diagram.

Using the simple corner flip method illustrated in the video above, and fabrics and sizes indicated on the units, make TWO of the following:

After making the above, assemble block as shown below, using SCANT quarter inch seams.

You should have an 8 1/2" scrappy hoagie. (8" finished in quilt.) I love all this calorie free food. :)

Time for lunch! :) Thanks for dropping in for a read today. I'll be back in a couple with the next block in line. See you soon!

Happy Stitching!

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.

I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*if you're looking for any of the other 90 or so blocks I've posted so far. Getting closer to my goal of 144 blocks! If you know someone who loves MinecraftPokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!

Thanks for the fun block. Here in New York, they're called hero sandwiches. No matter what they're called, I love them piled high with all sorts of ingredients.
