Teddy Bear Quilt Block Tutorial
12:00 AM
When I sat down to design this Teddy Bear quilt block for my National Days scrap quilt project and National Teddy Bear Day, I really had no idea how to even start.
Or where it would end up. But I knew I had already done a bear head.. for National Black Bear Day, so I didn't want to do just another bear head. (Plus, that block took ages to work out! See that look on his face? That's how I felt trying to get his design just right! haha)
But eventually I ended up super happy with the black bear and now feel the same for this little Teddy and the 3D effect of him!
In some kind of magical way, he's reaching out for a hug. :) He's like the opposite of the eye rolling black bear. haha One is moody sarcasm and one is a warm hug. I just love them both now.
If I counted right, I think this little guy has a total of 14 corner flips. But he's soo worth it! When I plugged him into the Christmas/Holiday sampler mockup, he kind of gave it life and stole the show!
Without him, it's just not as much fun.
Okay, here we go then.. here's how this Teddy Bear quilt block goes together.
Fabric A - Background
(6) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(2) 2 x 2 1/2"
(1) 2 x 3"
(2) 2 x 4"
Fabric B - Bear
(4) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 1/2" (>)
(2) 1 x 2"
(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(3) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(2) 1 3/4" sq.
(2) 2" sq.
(1) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"
Fabric C - Hands/Feet/Nose
(2) 1 x 1 1/4" (=)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(2) 2" sq.
(2) 2 x 2 1/4"
Fabric D - Eyes/Nose
(3) 1" sq. (~)
--Match the symbols (~,*, etc.) in the cutting instructions with the symbols in the assembly diagram.
After you've made the above units, assemble block as shown below, using SCANT quarter inch seams.
You'll have an 8 1/2" sq. Teddy Bear quilt block that needs a hug. :) (8" finished in quilt.)
I love him! That's it for now. I'll be back soon with the next block in line. Bring your appetite for that one. hehe ;) Until then..
Happy Stitching!
xoxo,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*, if you're looking for any of the other 90 or so blocks I've posted so far. Getting closer to my goal of 144 blocks! If you know someone who loves Minecraft, Pokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!
xx
