Shirt Quilt Block Tutorial for National Orange Shirt Day
12:00 PM
Orange Shirt Day wasn't high up on my "Oh, that'd make a fun block!" list for my National Days scrap quilt project... but I needed it to get to my total of 144 different blocks. Now, though, I think I'll wind up with a couple over the 144 mark.. because I added a Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a snowman block at the last minute. (My mom collects snowmen so I wanted to include a scrappy snowman block.) But, instead of kicking this one off the list, I'm keeping it because it's super simple, super scrap friendly, and wait til you see it mixed with some of the others in themed groups! (Think scrub top.) I'll show you at the end.. But first, here is my block for National Orange Shirt Day.
*edit* I started wondering about the meaning behind Orange Shirt Day so went googling. It originated in Canada and has so much more meaning! 🧡 You can read more about it *here*.
It's an easy one with far less pieces than some of the others. Here is how to make this tiny scrappy shirt.
Fabric A - Background
(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(4) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(2) 2 1/4" sq.
(2) 2 1/4 x 3 1/2"
Fabric B - Shirt
(2) 1 3/4 x 2 1/4"
(2) 2 1/4 x 4 1/2"
(1) 4 3/4 x 5"
--Match the symbols (+,* etc.) in the cutting instructions with the symbols in the assembly diagram.
Once you've completed the above clip & flip units, assemble block as shown below using SCANT quarter inch seams.
You will have an 8 1/2" sq. scrappy (as scrappy as you'd like) orange (or any color) shirt quilt block, 8" sq. when finished in quilt.
Now, as promised, look at what a fun Dr. or Nurse themed quilt it would make when paired with the stethoscope block (National Nurses Day), because it really does look like a scrub top! I love it so much!
And if you add the various animal blocks.. (Puppy Day, Dog Day, Jumping Frog Day, Rubber Ducky Day, Kitten Day, Dog Biscuit Day but you could add Bird Day too) .. a Vet themed scrap quilt!
The next block on the list coming up will be the block for National Hair Day. It's a fun one, too. :) But first, look for Sirius Black to join the Harry Potter quilt block tutorials!
I'll be back soon!
Happy Weekend & Happy Stitching!
xoxo,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*, if you're looking for any of the other 100+ blocks I've posted so far. Getting closer to my goal of 144 blocks! If you know someone who loves Minecraft, Pokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!
