Handbag Quilt Block Tutorial for National Handbag Day
2:28 PM
Hello again! I hope this finds you well. There's so much going on in the world..
I don't know about you, but I've been watching all of the news about the passing of Queen Elizabeth II for the last week. She was such a fascinating lady, and lived such a long life of service and sacrifice, while being a first hand witness to so much history.
As I sat down to write the tutorial for the next block in line for my National Days scrap quilt project, I realized that Her Majesty was always seen with her handbag.. perfect timing for this one to pop up. So.. there's an imaginary marmalade sandwich tucked inside this handbag just for her.😢 Rest in peace, ma'am.
Fabric A - background:
(4) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 8 1/2"
(1) 1 1/4 x 2 1/2"
(2) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(2) 1 1/2 x 5 1/2"
(1) 1 3/4 x 3 1/2"
(2) 3" sq.
Fabric B - bag body:
(2) 1" sq. (~)
(2) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(2) 1 x 1 3/4"
(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(1) 1 1/4 x 2 1/2"
(1) 2 x 3 1/2"
(2) 2 1/2 x 4"
Fabric C - clasp:
(1) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(1) 1 1/2 x 1 3/4"
Fabric D - handle/trim:
(2) 1 x 1 1/4"
(1) 1 x 2 1/2" (>>)
(1) 1 x 3 1/2" (>>>)
(2) 2" sq.
--Match the symbols (~,* etc.) in the cutting instructions with the symbols in the assembly diagram.
--------------------
Once you've completed the above clip & flip units, assemble block as shown below using SCANT quarter inch seams.
You'll have an 8 1/2" sq. handbag quilt block. (8" when finished in quilt.)
This reminds me of a purse I would've carried in the 80s. And would possibly still carry today..haha!
I hope you enjoy this little scrap block, or scrap bag.
I'll be back soon.
Until then..
Happy Stitching!
xoxo,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.
I'm keeping all of these blocks organized on the National Days quilt blocks page *HERE*, if you're looking for any of the other 100+ blocks I've posted so far. Getting closer to my goal of 144 blocks! If you know someone who loves Minecraft, Pokemon, and or Harry Potter, check out these free sew alongs, too! :) And if you're looking for any of my print patterns, or other fun quilty gifts, check out my Etsy shop here. Be back soon!
xx
