Bison Quilt Block, a Fun Animal Quilt Block Tutorial

Hello! Welcome back! It's been a few weeks since I've posted.. Today, I thought I'd share maybe my FAVORITE National Day quilt block tutorial of all. The bison for National Bison Day (which was in November). Two of our favorite places to visit are Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park. So when I saw that there was a National Day for the bison, I KNEW it would have to be included in my National Days scrap quilt project !

He sure wasn't easy to draw and work out, though! Let me tell you, I lost track of the time I spent trying to get his shape right. Days. And then to get him to fit into an 8" quilt block, with no cut pieces smaller than 1". But in the end it was worth it, I really realllly like how he turned out!

Here is how this guy goes together..

Fabric A - background:
(9) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 2"
(1) 1 x 2 1/2"
(1) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(1) 1 1/4 x 1 3/4"
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/4"
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(1) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"
(2) 2 1/2 x 3 1/2"

Fabric B - dark brown:
(1) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 2"
(2) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(1) 1 1/4 x 1 3/4"
(1) 2 1/4 x 3"
(1) 3 1/2 x 4 1/2"

Fabric C - light brown:
(3) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(1) 1 x 2"
(1) 1 x 2 1/2"
(1) 3 1/4 x 3 1/2"

Fabric D - horn:
(1) 1" sq. (~)
(1) 1 x 2"

Fabric E - feet:
(2) 1" sq. (~)

Fabric F - grass:
(1) 1 1/2 x 8 1/2"

Match the symbols (~,** etc.) in the cutting instructions with the symbols in the assembly diagram.

Using the simple corner flip method illustrated in the video above, and fabrics and sizes indicated on the unit, make the following corner flip units.

When the above units are done, assemble your bison quilt block as shown below, being sure to use SCANT quarter inch seams.

I love him! haha

Okay, I love him so much, that I've drawn up a lap quilt design that's in the works. I can't wait to show you. I have some other new patterns in the works that I need to get in my shop first, though.

I'm hoping to have one new pattern in my shop this weekend. It's called Boulangerie. Stay tuned for that!

It's Yummy! :)

Until next time, I hope you're having a wonderful weekend, and that this little tiny bison tutorial brought a smile to your day! As someone on Instagram said, remember, don't pet the fluffy cows!

Happy Stitching!

xoxo,

P.S. I love to see blocks and quilts that are made with any of my patterns. If you make any and post on social media, please come find me in any of the places listed below, and tag me so I can see! :) If you're on YouTube, check out the short musical video tutorials of some of these blocks. I'm hoping they might inspire kids, or anyone really, to learn to sew. :) Plus, they're just fun to do.

He’s fantastic and so are the doughnuts!

I thought about you while I was in Alaska over Christmas. We visited 3 different quilt stores, and I saw one of your cute pins at one of the shops. I like your bison.

I just made my first Mickey Mouse block yesterday for a baby quilt needed in June. So glad you posted someone's Mickey quilt on IG. It was the inspiration I needed to start this quilt and thankfully the block is easier than some of the Minecraft blocks.
