Harry Potter Quilt: Chocolate Frogs Quilt Block Tutorial
12:32 AM
It's been so long since I've posted one of the Harry Potter quilt extra blocks, I thought I'd post the Chocolate Frogs today.
According to Harry Potter Wiki, "Chocolate Frogs are a popular confection that are sold throughout the wizarding world. They are packaged with collectible cards portraying famous wizards and witches. Many of the pupils at Hogwarts collect and trade these cards. The frogs are made of seventy percent Croakoa. Presumably, this substance is what allows them to act like an actual frog." Good wizarding times! :D
This block was easy to design, because I had already drawn an 8" frog block for National Jumping Frog Day.
So, this 18" block consists of four of these 8" sub-blocks, in which all of the frog parts are brown, except for black eyes. I'm reusing the assembly diagram from the National Day block, just consider all of the frog Fabric B brown, except the eyes.
Here is what you'll need to do..
Fabric A -- background, for entire block, cut ONE set:
(20) 1" sq. (~)
(8) 1 x 1 1/4" (@)
(8) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(4) 1 1/4" sq. (+)
(16) 1 1/4 x 1 1/2"
(16) 1 1/4 x 2"
(16) 1 1/2" sq. (*)
(4) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(8) 1 3/4 x 2"
(4) 2" sq.
(4) 2 x 2 1/2"
(8) 2 1/2 x 3"
(2) 1 1/2 x 16 1/2"
(2) 1 1/2 x 18 1/2"
Fabric B -- brown for each frog sub-block, in case you want to use different shades of brown for each, cut four sets:
(4) 1" sq. (~)
(4) 1 x 1 1/4" (@)
(3) 1 x 1 1/2" (>)
(4) 1 x 3"
(3) 1 1/2 x 1 3/4"
(1) 1 1/2 x 2" (#)
(1) 1 1/2 x 2 1/2" (**)
(2) 2 x 2 1/4"
(1) 3 1/4 x 4 1/2"
Fabric C -- black eyes, for entire block, cut ONE set:
(8) 1" sq. (~)
--Be sure to match the symbols (~,@ etc.) in the cutting instructions with the symbols in the assembly diagram.
Using the simple corner flip method illustrated in the video above, and fabrics and sizes indicated on the unit, make the following corner flip units for each of the four frog sub-blocks. Note the video shows double upper corners, but these units' corner flips vary.
----------------------------------
Once the corner flips are complete, stitch up each frog sub-block as shown below, being sure to use SCANT quarter inch seams.
Repeat for total of four 8" (8 1/2" at this point) frog sub-blocks.
----------------------------------
When you have four 8 1/2" frogs, stitch your 18 1/2" (18" finished in quilt) Chocolate Frogs block together as shown below.
Ta Da! Chocolate Frogs!
I wanted to add a little show and tell at the end here.. look at this fabulous quilt that was shared on my FB page, made by Susan for her hub for Christmas!
It turned out sooo good!
That's it for today! I hope you have a great weekend! I'll be back soon with more block tutorials and some other fun stuff.
Happy Stitching!
