Harry Potter SewAlong

Welcome to the Harry Potter SewAlong page! This is where you'll find all of the info and block links for this 20-block twin size (77 x 96") quilt made up of 18" blocks... **edit** TONS of extra blocks have been added at the end; there will be more than 50 to choose from!

Fabric requirements & info:

See this link for downloadable pdf list of fabric requirements, including the background amount!

Harry Potter Sew Along Fabric Req. and Info

For those of you who would like to use the colors that I've picked, shown in the quilt image, you can purchase the fabrics in a bundle/kit at Fat Quarter Shop by clicking HERE! The kit includes fabrics for the original 20 blocks shown in the quilt image. It does not include yardage for any extra blocks.

**The kit also does not include background or binding fabrics, as people might wish to choose a different background and change up the binding. But if you like the Moda Bella Mauve background that is shown in the image above, you can purchase it by clicking here.

Each block post will also be downloadable as a pdf for those that won't be sewing near a computer. Just print it out and take with you! The link to each download will be at the end of that block post.

The format: one block tutorial every Saturday starting on January 19, 2019 in tandem with Sew Fresh Quilts, who is also doing a Harry Potter sew along this year, so we decided to do them together and cross post and link our blocks! (Tons of options!) You will find each block's tutorial link below, going live as they are posted.

**One other note: be sure you're familiar with the scant quarter inch seam. If not, no worries, you can read about it here.

Sashing Info: The sashing strips are as follows:

Cut (25) 1 1/2 x 18 1/2" strips
Cut or piece (6) 1 1/2 x 77 1/2" strips.

These strips will leave a 1" inch sash between each block, and also a built-in 1" inch border all the way around when it's sewn together.

Come sew along!

So excited for this - completeing my fabric pull for a mash-up of the two Potter quilts!

I love Creative Life's idea of doing a mashup of the two quilts! How fun would that be?! Can't wait to see everyone's versions of the Harry Potter quilts. Happy New Year, Kelli!

I’m so excited for this. I have WAY too much on my plate for the coming year but other projects are getting pushed aside for this one. This will be a great gift for my Harry Potter obsessed (adult!) son.

Could you do a deathly Hallows block? I told myself that i would not start anything new and get my projects done, but i will have to start this. Looks amazing.

My son is a huge Potterhead and will turn 12 on June 26th. Wouldn't this be the perfect birthday gift?

Looks like FUN!!!!!

So excited I'm going to do this for next yr gift for friend and possibly second one for me.

I’m going to try to make two at a time so both daughter & dauter’n law get one?!

I am FAR too excited for this! I am still very much a beginner at quilting, but HP is my favorite. I am looking forward to trying out a new project my daughter and I can admire forever!

I have several adult kids that are Potterheads that would love this. Kit is ordered.

I am so excited to make this quilt. I have a granddaughter who is really into Harry Potter right now, so this is perfect timing!!

Thank you so much for sharing this. Does anyone have suggestions for alternative background colors? (I am genuinely awful at color selection.). I have three boys and would like to give each one their own HP quilt as a gift when they finish reading the series. I would like each of them to have a unique background color though. Love the current background color for one of them. What else might look good?

Is this a paper pieced quilt or just a regular pieced quilt?

I have a Question.... I am one of those that likes to have the full pattern and not do a week to week thing i love this quilt and my mothers birthday is about 3 weeks away and i would love to make this for her for her birthday is there a way to get the block patterns with out going threw the sew along.... please email me at meg.bukowski@gmail.com thanks

Love this quilt along so thank you. I’m a huge Harry Potter fanatic.
So, I bought the bundle from fat quarter shop and and I was wondering which beige color did you use for the face Harry Potter?
There’s three in the bundle and I can’t tell from the pictures or I’m possibly being an over achiever and just want it to be perfect.

I am LOVING this sewalong (it's also the first one I've ever done). So for the epic back will it be Hogwarts Castle? Because I could get down with that! Or maybe The Hogwarts Express? A pixelated portrait of JK Rowling?

Hi Kelli - Love the HP patterns and just got the kit in the mail (while I have a large stash, I have no solids, so I ordered the kit). Is there any way you can reference the same color descriptions you gave for the moda bella solids (or the numbers of the colors) when you give colors in the patterns (for example, block one, you say to use 'lighter yellow'... there are three yellows in the kit: dark yellow, bright yellow and yellowish-white, no 'lighter yellow')... thanks for your time - Anne

Hi Kelli,
Loving the pattern and have the bundle from Fat Quarter Shop. I think someone else may have commented on this -- would really appreciate if the weekly cutting instructions could list the FQS sku # or the Bella Solids color name. I went through your list and my bundle matching up fabrics to the list, but there is a little room for personal perception error (as I'm reminded when my mom called a clearly blue shade "grey"!). Thanks so much!!

Help please...I can't get block 9/Harry Potter's Wand to appear in printable form. I've had no problem with the other weeks. Thanks - Connie Jones

Enjoying the blocks. The link seems to be broke for the wand directions. Thank you

Loving these blocks. There seems to be an issue with the April 27th (Dumbledore) link. Thank you

Unknown said...

So glad I'm not the only one who can't open the Dumbledore block. Look forward to these every Saturday so I was very disappointed..

Am I missing the Quidditch cup directions. Can’t open it? Looking forward to getting these last four. Hagrid is being released on my birthday. Yeaaaa.

Unknown said...

I can't open Week 17 Quidditch Cup at all! Was there a problem posting it? Anyone else having this issue?

Hi Ladies! I just got the Cup linked! It's been such a crazy week, (and it's happened in the past, also) that I forgot to link it over here. Sorry about that! But, if it happens again (hopefully not!), the posts are live each Saturday starting at 00:01 a.m. so if by chance it is not linked here, just hit the HOME tab at the top up there and it will take you to the main page where you can access the most recent post, as well as past posts by scrolling down. Thanks for your patience with this! :) I super appreciate it! xo

What color thread should I use to quilt?

Hi, I can't get into the Knight Bus. |Can I get some help? Thanks!

Kelli, any chance of getting the back layout soon. I have granddaughter with a late July birthday and would love to see the back layout in the next couple of weeks. Thanks!

Any chance the format for the sorting hat and Dumblerdore blocks are available in a non PDF format?

Is there going to be a Luna lovegood and Malfoy block?

Margo said...

I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed putting the Harry Potter quilt together. Each and every block was so much fun. You are totally awesome in my books. Patterns are easily to follow and you even take the time to comment on the blocks posted in FB. I am now working on the Minecraft quilt!! Cannot wait to share it when it is done.

Thank you so much for the sew along. Can't wait to see the extra blocks too.

Hi, I am having so much fun with this - it's my first pixel-type project :) I love it! I'm wondering, will there still be a few more blocks, or is what is posted done? (I only ask because I saw that there were perhaps intended to be a couple more and I didn't want to miss any if so?) Thank you :)

So happy to find this Harry Potter Sew a Long. I heard of it on one of the FQS videos and found the fabric and more on the FQS
My grandchildren love Harry Potter and because of your generosity I’ll be be able make them pillows of a couple of the houses for Christmas
I would also like to make the quilt but won’t be able to start for several months
How long will the patterns be available
Again thank you for your generosity for posting all your wonderful patterns for those of us with kids in our lives who love Harry Potter, Pokémon etc!!!!

These blocks are awesome. How about a spider block, a hippogrith, and maybe a Sirious Black as a dog block? :)

I am almost done with my quilt top... and I REALLY loved this project! (also almost done with the Minecraft quilt... ;) ). I have really improved my quilt piecing skills with all the excellent advice from the people on the Facebook group. It is seriously a great way to get into quilting and do a project you love or can give. Thank you SOO much for these fairly easy piecing projects! You directions made even the harder angles easy!

I love all these blocks for HARRY POTTER. I once saw someone post a picture of their finished top and had the Hogwarts School (castle). Did I miss it? Is there any chance you could post it again. I had hoped to put it in the center of my quilt top. You are truly talented. These quilt blocks are amazing. Thank you for sharing.

Hi, thank you so much for these patterns they are so fun and fantastic!
I want to ask, my daughter (11) wants to sew the blocks. She gas done quilts before and is not a complete beginner but I am thinking the 1” blocks may be way to small for her to work with. Do you think it would work if I doubled all measurements and make blocks much larger? Obviously she would then not do all blocks just a select fee for one quilt.
I would love to know your thoughts on this. We are not too worried that finished size should be a specific bed size.

Thank you for such a wonderful quilt pattern, it looks so much fun!!
I have a question, my daughter (11) wants to make this quilt. She has made other quilts before and is thus not a complete beginner. I am thinking though that the 1” blocks might be way too difficult for her to work with, so am wondering if we double all block sizes do you think it will still work out per block? Obviously then she will only be able to do a select few blocks for a complete quilt. We are also not too concerned with finished size and it being a specific bed size. Would live to know your thoughts and suggestions.

Your work is so amazing and inspiring!

Thanks
Elsjebe

So glad you’ve created these Harry Potter blocks. I did your Minecraft blocks to make twin bed quilts for my twin grandsons (who were 9 at the time) for Christmas 2019 - they LOVED THEM! They are still into Minecraft, even creating UTube videos to help people with the game! They also love anything Harry Potter, so I’m using your patterns to make throw quilts for each of them for next Christmas. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you for making your patterns available for free!
Smiles, Sandy N.

What a beautiful mind you have. I will be finishing school at the end of summer and I am looking forward to making all of these blocks to use for a full harry potter theme for my nephew who is autistic and has found a love for EVERYTHING Potter. I cannot wait to see the creations of the rest of the extra blocks as well. You have such an eye. Thank you so much for your hard work on these blocks as they will be making yet another child extremely happy and a mom have a few moments of seeing her son giggle and smile (hopefully).

Thank you so much for the time you have taken to make these sew-a-longs!! I grew up loving harry potter myself and now i love my oldest is also in love with it!! I can not wait to finish making this quilt for him! (I just started not long ago) I completely understand life gets in the way, but do you still plan on continuing with the extra blocks as you had planned last year?? Im still a long ways from finishing all of the first 20, let alone the extra 28, but if more will be added as planned i would like to plan for them in the total number of blocks made. I hope you continue and post at least the ones you had lusted and planned for, but as i said i knoe life sometimes changes things! Thank you so much again, for all the time you take doing these!!!! You make so many children happy with them!

I would love a marauders map block….maybe footprints 👣 walking across the block?!

Hello Kelli...I can believe how time flies, since Harry Potter came out.
I think it would be neat to add a block with the blue monkeys...forgot what they where called...lol.
I love the Pixel quilt I can't wait to start it. Everone in our home loves the Harry Potter movies. Thanks 4 the free patterns. Your Awesome, Cyndi Mercier

If you're still looking for additional block ideas, here are a few that came to mind: any of the patronuses, an ink pot and quill, Bubckbeak, the golden egg, any of the horcruxes, the hogwarts letter with the white envelops and red seal, a dementor
